SONiC is a very good platform to build a switch or even router, but the people who have such intelligence are in Cisco or Juniper... so "open networking" can hardly compete with commercial box... any comments?
SONiC is great and definitely very interesting option for data center or slowly for a campus but still not with the DNX family to be fully on the router side. But in regards general topic as it is open networking or disaggregation then it is not only about SONiC - even mentioned Cisco with their IOS XR can run on some Edgecore of Ufi bare-metal boxes. Cisco as well as NVIDIA or DELL are promoting SONiC as well - less or more. So I believe that it really depends but in many cases it could compete with those traditional boxes which in fact are coming most likely with same Broadcom chips and in many cases from the same factories - key is the NOS... yes and then we have some other option like OcNOS from IP Infusion, PicOS from Pica8, BISDN, Exaware etc. etc. a bit longer discussion :)
