I think a small popup for health, or maybe a bit of onomatopoeia like "HIT" would be good, but other than that, the rice being recuded over time would be good. the small health cave would be cool as a sort of checkpoint mid level. Maybe it can only be used 2 times and a symbol on the enterence shows that (1st use: full, 2nd use, half, any other attempts at entry after: none)

that perfectly round circle that is cut out of the character on the first hit doesn't make sense for me. Looks like a hole from a fireweapon, I'd make it look more like somebody took a bite of the onigiri

You should double down on the sushi theme. Make levels in giant sushi restaurants, kitchens, home kitchen, fish market, etc. Avoid being sliced by giant cleavers or rolled up by evil nori or sushi rollers. Have more Japanese art, more tori gates, cherry blossoms, stone statues, bamboo, wood prints, etc. Maybe you save fish from being turned into sushi. The current "sushi in generic fantasy platformer land" is random, but not really in a fun way (sorry). Inject more soul into it. (though I realize this is very early and making art is hard, I'm struggling with the same thing in my 3D action game now. Good luck. You're going to make it.)

i'm a big fan of diagetic health ui and i love the loss of rice mechanic however with that hole it isn't viewable how mush health you have at all angles. Might i suggest larger chomps from the top that more drastically alter the silhouette and/or permanently leaking rice. maybe you could also change the color of the nori or something

Hmmmm. Maybe if it wasn’t to hard make “button to interact” a setting that you could switch on and off? Also I have a question. I have been wanting to learn ue5 for SO LONG. I just bought a pc recently and I cannot find any tutorials whatsoever. I really could use your help on tips and tricks. Thanks 😊

Thats a good idea! Or maybe first one is auto to let the player know, then button from then 🤔 I just followed RU-vid tutorials to get going and get a feeling for the engine, although I was coming from years in Unity so it wasn't a super steep learning curve 🍙 I would follow a small series first to get some knowledge, and then try and make something without following a guide to challenge what you've learnt 💪

There will be other times to see them, but during an enclosed level this is how to see them 🍙 these rooms aren't the only way to heal, and won't always be the easiest to find 👀

LOL 😂 I also see how the vine thing attacks Obakenori. If the vine/plant/tree thing is too short, and if it’s far away enough from Obakenori, wouldn’t that mean the player could just avoid these entirely? 🤔 It only attacks when you get close - i think it can’t move? Unless it is required to defeat these for The Chef, (i didn’t see an item drop, so probably not) I wonder how you could balance these enemies out so it proves a challenge, or if they’re supposed to be easy 😅

Not if they are in tight areas or on platforms! You might need to time things more carefully 👀 there will be some form of collectables for defeating enemies in a certain area!

That's the idea! Need to get play testing to know if it balances nicely, but I'm hopeful! The demo won't have the Chef because I want to get it out and it will take too long to create his house+the story elements, so the frog will be the keeper of the Healing Room 🐸

Awesome video! The game is looking super polished and beautiful. I really like the diegetic UI idea of the health system. It actually fits very well with your game. The player will instantly know how much health is left by just looking at the player character. Also really like the idea that when the player character is small, the worm phase, then it can fit through certain areas. This is clever idea and you can use it give shortcuts or just special places. Overall this is a well made game. Looking forward to your next devlog. Keep it up! :)

Love the visual of the health loss, but I think the perfectly circular cutout doesn't come across right (people would see it more as a visual glitch) Instead you should degrade the edges of the rice > gets rougher and smaller until finally changes to his weaker form

His damaged model should have rice grains within the cut part to keep that textured look of rice, instead of a very hard clean cut. Additionally, there should be 3-4 damaged meshes that slowly get to that massive chunk being gone.

Also, you have massive rice particles when he gets hit but none when he completely looses all his rice. I'd remove this massive particle when getting hit, and keep it for when he completely looses his body and turns into the worm.

I will be finalising the model and making sure his insides are also rice (and maybe a filling!) 🍙 I will be including 3/4 different levels of damage 💪 Good spot about the rice! I'll fix that up 🍙
