Candlepin Bowling is the official game of bowling for New England, and the Canadian Maritimes. If you ever find yourself in these areas, try out Candlepin Bowling! It's so much fun, and different!
We use 4.5" bowling balls and 15 3/4" tall skinny pins (3" wide). In Candlepin you get 3 balls per turn, and do not clear wood between shots, any wood on the deck is used in play to help knock down pins.
Candlepin bowling is not a game of strikes, but more of a game of spares, with some strikes.
A 300 game has never been achieved in Candlepin.
A pro Candlepin bowler scores an average of at least 112/Men 102/Women.

I also have Irish Protestant roots from my Dad's family, the Barrett's, migrated from Ireland to Newfoundland in the 18th century, so I loved the "Irish Luck" remark in the end.
I quit ten pin bowling due to a torn right forearm flexor on a back swing using a 15 pound finger tip ball. I can return to bowling with either hand if it's candlepin. Great game and great video.
@@ballpen9157 in candlepin u don't curve the ball there is no oil on the lane curving don't help and is not effective without oil my brother curves it and he's shit a straight ball will always do more damage
@@ballpen9157 bc curve doesn't make the pins fall better they fall worse I'm a 97 average and curving is pointless in candlepin unless u have like 20 years to master curving like a pro I know in his 80s
I've watched the video. I'm a bowler and I sometimes keep score. Dan gets too many strikes and spares to understand score keeping. I would start off with regular score keeping with no strikes or spares to understand the basics of score keeping. Then add the strikes and spares. It also doesn't give you any tips about hitting your target.
Even if you're an experienced ten pin bowler, you will find this game very challenging. PBA champion 'Packy' was trying his hand at candlepin bowling and having a difficult time.

You are so spot on, I remember this song from early 1972. So happy that Tom and You were close in what I assume to be your High School years knowing how old Tom is. Your post really gave this video an extra touch of class. I just read a couple of your "replies" to Tom's health issue post by Matt. An added insight into your good times with Tom. It seems that the cancer scare occured before the Induction Ceremony since the post that mentions it makes me think it was a pre October of 2014 time in his life with the post being 8 years old. I am only giving you an opinion based on a timeline and of course this being almost 9 years later I have no idea of any current situations.
This guy was the best bowler ever. I’ll never forget meeting him in 1986 at a banquet when I was a state champion in Massachusetts. I was just 14 years old, but what a great guy also. Did pictures and autographs with all the winners for boys and girls, different divisions, etc. Congratulations Tom! Greatest bowler ever!
This video just showed up in my feed here and I've wondered the same thing for quite some time. I heard mention of a controversy, but about what, I have no idea. Either way, they finally got it right in 2014.
pins and a bowling ball...just wondering what other name you might have for it...the official name of this sport is called "candlepin bowling" so you cant call it tennis
Halifax, Nova Scotia is my hometown, so I used to play Candlepin Bowling on a recreation basis. I moved to Newfoundland in 2008 for family and employment reasons, so I had to settle for 5 Pin Bowling (Canadian Bowling). Strange that my High Single in 5 Pin is 312, but only 96 in Candlepin. When I return home for vacation, I usually have a few games of Candlepin.
The best bowler to ever grace the candlepin lanes. When I was growing up I would tune in to channel 5 in hopes of seeing Tom bowl. He is the reason why I still bowl today. I am so happy Tom was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He deserved it.
@@steveboone1498 5 years later and I am still at it. I .avg between 92 and 96. I am a very straight ball thrower. So my entry angle is just that. Now If I can just stop releasing it too early or holding it too long my confidence level would be better!
@@JBSmallz77 timing is key to a good release, it's a matter of when or where to release it. I will say that your average in candlepin is above average.
I'm done now. So duckpin was invented by those 2 Baltimore Orioles because they wanted to come up with a more difficult version of this game. I get it now.
Duckpins are shortest, candlepins are tallest. The different types of bowling in North America are 10-pin, Candlepin, rubber-band duckpin(with and without string pinsetters), non-rubber band duckpin(with and without string pinsetters), and 5-pin(played with each pin having a point total attached to them; with and without string pinsetters). =P
Many thanks, been searching for "what is the length of a regulation bowling lane?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Piylivern Remarkable Predominance - (search on google ) ? It is a good exclusive guide for discovering how to up your bowling game quickly minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my partner got excellent success with it.
Oh, I hate to hear that. Tommy was my first love. We went out together for about 2 1/2 years when we were teenagers. I was a pretty good bowler myself back then but not as good as him. We both were good billiard players, too! I met him when my mom took me to Southbridge to bowl out there instead of Mohegan bowl-a-drone in Webster, Where I was from. I hope he is still doing well, I sure would love to hear from him. Those were the days! Fond memories, Tommy! You’ll always be Tommy to me!
Addendum, I also remember his grandfather, who also worked at the bowling alley in Southbridge. He always had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for his lunch in a brown paper sack. He would polish those alleys and dust them and keep everything running smooth and he was got in his late 70s I think back then. Very fond memories of Tommy, and his mom Phyllis. His mom and dad were getting divorced back then. I remember it like it was yesterday.
They honestly should never have thought about demolishing it. This is the house where many historic Candlepin games occurred, including the taping of Boston's local broadcasts of Candlepin matched back in the day, and most significantly Paul Berger's 500 triple. So many Candlepin houses in Massachusetts and they picked this one for the chopping block. Greed is indeed to blame
