Hi there! Thank you for this cool demonstration of this lovely laptop. This really is a neat little machine and I should know, because I own two of them. I'm planning on upgrading one of them to better specs. At the moment I'm figuring out, on how to upgrade the CPU. Unfortunately, I can't just simply put a new CPU in and call it a day. I need to set the DIP switches first before I can upgrade the CPU. And here's where the problem lies, so let me address the elephant in the room. The FMA862 really isn't a well known laptop and information on it is sparse. But what makes matters worse, as of now, nobody has ever documented the DIP switch settings for this machine before. But when I stumbled upon your video, I couldn't help myself but notice, that your's has a Pentium 150. In case you still own this laptop, would you mind taking pictures of the DIP switches? They are located right next to the left RAM slot. I would really appreciate, if you could do me the favor. You may very well be my only hope to make the CPU upgrade possible. Let me know If you have trouble finding the DIP switches and I'll make sure to provide you a picture via my google drive.

Hey there. I've got almost the same thing but Model 862, which seemingly got a 200 MHz Pentium MMX. I'm very unsure about the CPU frequency as the switches you're talking about seem to affect it. Currently I have 2, 4 and 7 enabled. Disabling 4 makes the display/GPU a bit weird, disabling 2 makes the CPU underclock to 180 MHz (with also enabling 8 it goes to 150), and 6/7 in both disabled/enabled state don't even seem to do anything. Is my CPU some sort of manageable?.. Long ago I did some experiments with these switches, but can't remember much already. From what I do remember, the lowest freq I managed to get is 75 MHz, but it had some artifacts/non-working display. The 3rd switch can make the display crazily go into white (and this switch is not the only thing that can cause this), the 5th switch just immediately makes it white after init, some other ones can cause artifacts. So, recollecting the stuff said above, seemingly the switches that are required to be enabled for a 150 MHz CPU are 4, 8 (or 4, <6>, <7>, 8). I am still unsure if that's actually true, as the models differ and I don't know which CPU I've got. And it's probably not the only possible configuration. Actually, if you've got any information on at least some of the switches installed on this device, please share, it'd be very interesting for me to know.

@@aistop Hi! First and foremost, thank you for responding to my comment! I really appreciate it. Apologies for the delayed response. It wasn't planned to keep you waiting for that long. I neglected to check my notifications, and I didn't notice that you responded to my comment. Anyway, I digress. As per your request, I will provide you the switch settings on my device as soon as I can. This may take a while because I am not at home at the moment. Therefore, I kindly ask for a little patience. I hope you don't mind that. However, I did some further digging and came across an archived link, that may also be useful for you. The link can be found here: web.archive.org/web/20040610062209/teytelman-pbdsl1.stanford.edu/~dim/laptop/index.html It covers a couple of different switch settings and also provides a brief overview of this laptop (or at least similar models). Unfortunately, and just like you pointed out, the models do indeed differ from each other. For that reason, I can't guarantee, that any of these switch settings will work on your unit. So please only proceed with caution and don't trust everything I say. It's better to be safe than sorry. BTW, I've made the decision to refrain from upgrading my TN549PRO anymore and will instead keep it the way it is. I don't want to risk breaking it just for a few more MHz. It's just not worth it to me. I'm really sorry, if this wasn't the answer, you were expecting. Still, I hope my reply was at least helpful in some way.

@@wiliusundefined8666 Greetings again, Big thanks for your answer. I myself couldn't find any information about the switches on this laptop, and the link you've sent is definitely going to help me in the research. It's a shame that the manuals' links mentioned there aren't available, but still, what's available is very nice. As for your laptop's switches configuration, take your time, of course. I'm grateful anyway, no matter when. Well, maybe your decision on not upgrading the laptop is right. It'd be really sad if something will break or even burn. Anyway, if you maybe need something else about the laptop from me, I'd be happy to help. I've never thought I'm ever going to be talking to a person with such a device, these seem to be quite rare nowadays already...

@@aistop Hi again! As promised, here are the switch settings of my Targa TN549PRO. My device is configured for a 133 MHz (non-MMX) Pentium with a 10,5" SVGA TFT panel. Switches 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 are set to the OFF position and switches 2, 4 and 8 are set to the ON position. By the way, I do have the original manual for this laptop, but it's not very detailed and doesn't provide any relevant information, such as the DIP switch settings. In other words, it has virtually no purpose for me. It's possible that there are differences between my manual and the one which is unavailable, but unfortunately, we may never know. I'd also like to express my gratitude for your kind offer. I really appreciate it. At the moment, there's nothing that I need. This thing works remarkably well for its age. Even the battery still lasts for well over an hour. The only issue, I encountered, is a faulty floppy drive. It requires a fresh rubber belt. However, this doesn't bother me at all. Despite not having a funtioning floppy drive, it is still perfectly usable. In case I need anything from you in the future, I'll make sure to reach out to you. It too was a surprise for me to meet another FMA862/TN549 owner, but it was a pleasant one at that. I honestly didn't think anyone would even reply to my original comment at all. So once more, I'd like to thank you for your help! Sadly, you're right. Laptops like these are indeed becoming increasingly rare. This is why I'm glad that there are people out there (like you) who still care about vintage hardware.

@@wiliusundefined8666 Thank you for your switch config. The manual I've found is the Clevo official one, but it also barely contains any DIP switches description (just the TV mode ones). Anyway, it still had some useful information for POST failure signals and contained full laptop specs, so it's still nice to have. I could send the link to it / send it manually by email (it's in PDF) if you'd ever need. These laptops must be very compatible, so this should apply to yours too. I wish my battery was also working, but, unfortunately, it was already dead-ish right when I bought the laptop in 2021 (could hold for around five minutes). In 2022 it died completely. The floppy drive was dead too at the time I bought the laptop. It was trying to show signs of life, but Windows/DOS were just throwing the "not ready" error. Yet, I'm still happy with all that stuff being broken. Recently I bought an IDE 2.5-USB adapter for installing the OS. It's quite simple with VMware Workstation: the "use a physical disk" option can be used while creating the VM, and the install just goes as usual. Actually, perhaps this laptop can boot from CD-ROM? I haven't tried, nor I have a disk to try, but I quite doubt, haven't seen such an option in the SCU. Anyway, if you also have some stories/experience about the laptop, please tell about that, I'd be happy to hear.

@@piotrabedzki3481 Hello, I managed to find the manual for FMA862 by Clevo. According to it, this icon indicates power usage modes. A triple-leaking faucet means the system is running at full power. A double-leaking faucet means the system entered "Doze mode": the system clock reduces to 40MHz and the CPU enters stop-grant mode. A single-leaking faucet means the system entered "Sleep mode": the system clock reduces to 32MHz, the LCD turns off, the HDD goes to sleep and the CPU enters stop-grant mode. There is also a non-leaking faucet icon which means the system is suspended (CPU clock stops, the LCD turns off, selected peripherals turn off and the HDD goes to sleep). I think I also met such a problem before. It may just be that the laptop is suspended. Have you tried pressing the Suspend button on the left cover of the laptop? If that wouldn't work, try to reset CMOS (there is a jumper under the touchpad (simply removing the keyboard may be enough to access it), if i remember correctly it resets CMOS if removed).
