Very helpful video, Rob. Thanks for doing it. I am concerned about, as some commenters have mentioned, ringing out with the mic in the most extreme placement. Won’t it take out too much as opposed to doing with more natural mic placement. I will, however, try it your way next week and see what it sounds like. Thanks again.

Hi Rob, on the QU16, can you route a send / return or an insert to an outboard fx or pedal? Or are you limited to the onboard fx? Great tutorials, thanks man!

Alrighty Rob, I got an outboard send return working by sending a signal out through mix 5-6 and the return through the stereo line-in 1. Works just fine, and allows for parallel processing. Not sure if A&H intended these channels to be used to route instrument signal in this regard, but so far, sok.

Thank you for your video Rob! Is there a way to assign the FX as well? Here is my case. We're in a 3 people band and I would like every musician to have the master with the FX (that will be modified by the sound engineer) + their own mix (where we add just a bit more of a given instrument) in their in-ear monitors. Any ideas?
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 15 дней назад
Thx for the question. Using the FXReturn, the FX is simply part of the output where you have added that FX. When you assign an output to a matrix the FX will be part of the output signal. (I have other videos on using FX send and return). On the question of giving each player a copy of the master, unfortunately the QU series does not provide the option to route an output into another output. There's no direct way to send the LR back into a monitor mix output. I suppose you might do it with an external splitter and bring the LR back into a channel that can be used in a mix, but I'd be cautious of creating a feedback loop.

You made a statement that could be confusing. While discussing gain structure on the input channels, you mentioned that having the gain at zero or unity means nothing is added or subtracted from the input signal. That is not correct. Gain staging is about adjusting the input signal to line level, where the mixer operates optimally. The concept of 'unity' typically applies to the fader level-at this point, nothing is added or subtracted from the signal if the fader is set to zero.
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 23 дня назад
@@djbassick Thx for comment. Let me clarify. My statement about "Gain" is actually true, but as well your statement about "Gain Staging" is also quite correct. While unity does indeed apply to fader level, it also holds true for the gain adjustment. There is actually a "zero" or unity position on the gain dial, however I should have been more clear that the "zero" position of the dial does not correlate with the zero position in the input meters. Most input signals must be adjusted up or down from the gain knob zero position in order for the signal to register correctly on the input meters. Hope that helps

The Qu-PAc is based on the same engine as the qu32 and does actually include 2 stereo Matrix out. It is a limitation of the hardware footprint that does not include actual matrix jacks on the unit. Thanks a lot for your videos, really instructive. I am about to change my config (my gs-r24 is dying ;( ). I have question that I was not able to answer. Lets say I want to connect my Lexicon external effect with the QU-32, how should I plug in for the send? using Matrix? Mix? Groups? For the return it is clear that it will in two (stereo signal) of the 32 inputs, but for the send I am a bit lost here. Another question, if I have the XLR outs linked to the main PA but have also two sets of studio monitors how can I do it? I saw there only one alt set of stereo out for monitors ... (I am not talking about monitors for musician but studio monitors) The PA will not be used at the same time of the studio monitors. Thanks in advance!
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 Месяц назад
@@philippemartignier9858 Thx for the feedback and a great question. Your choice for "sending" to the external Lexicon will depend on what signal you want to send. Since you can only route an output to matrix, it would only make sense to use a matrix output if the signal you want to send is first assigned to an output and that output is assigned to a matrix. Probably and extra and unnecessary step. You could use a mix or a group but again the specific plan on what you want to send would help make that choice. Q2: For studio monitors I would recommend using the ALT outputs. You can easily assign many different existing outputs to the ALT so could even "monitor" different sources simply by changing the assignment to the ALT. The other benefit is that ALT has a dedicated physical volume level control.

Rob - related but need your help - 2 Q's please: 1) This video talks about routing a mix to USB. Other videos show how to route a mix to QU-Drive for recording (ex. route 5/6 to Ch. 17 and 18). But those videos and the AH user guide ONLY address "Stereo Recording". My question is if I route Mix 5/6 to channels 17/18 but do a MULTI-track recording - do you know if 5/6 will end up on 17/18? Meaning recorded tracks 1-16 are the individual input channels, but 17/18 are my routed 5/6, not the default L+R? 2) I've seen sources that say you CAN choose which of the 18 tracks to record multi...like inputs 1-5 only... but don't tell you how. I cannot find any way to do this. I've also read it's always all 18, no choosing. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Great questions. 1) That is correct. Assigning the channels for USB is a single interface that applies to both USB ports (rear port for a computer and the front port for q-drive) 2) Yes you can choose. Open the USB dialog screen where all 18 channels are listed. Tap any channel to highlight, then use the dial knob to choose the channel to be recorded in that spot. You can also dial it all the way around to "X" to essentially turn out off. NOTE however: the q-drive software will "record" all 18 channels regardless of the source you choose. Some of the resulting WAV files will simply be blank...but you will always got 18 of them

Connecting stereo is quite easy but depends on your wiring. If you have 2 separate cables (either 1/4 or XLR) you simply connect each to adjacent channels. eg 1&2. Then use the PAN control to move one channel to Left and the other to Right. Finally for convenience you can link the two channels so they are controlled as one. if you are using a single stereo jack, the QU series mixers have 3 jacks just for for that stereo connection (ST1 ST2 and ST3)

Since the introduction of digital mixers with built-in FX engines, manufacturers have eliminated the "insert" jack that used to be available on every input channel. Using an external FX can be done but will need to eat up extra inputs and outputs to accomplish it. First assign the channel(s) to a mix output - you will need to dedicate that mix output for the external FX until. Patch the Mix out jacks into the external unit. Patch the external unit output(s) back into unused input channels.
