Ford Master tech here. Unfortunately that is the normal sound of that engine. It's a mixture of valve train, and phasers. Nature of the beast. When somethings actually wrong you will know.

You've bought the worst generation for the 5.0l coyote. These literally have cylinder distortion issues as well as roller rocker arm bearings failing and sagging. Not to mention the oil consumption and deceleration rattle, this motor is junk

Cam phasers fail. Mine sounded exactly the same on my 2018. Currently at 70k miles. For the past 20k miles I’ve complained to ford about the noise and they said it’s normal , nothing wrong with it Now at 70k I’ve had complete cam phaser fail. Timing is so bad it won’t stay running. I have premium extended warranty but Ford corporate wants me to authorize 800.00+ feet to tear down top end so they can take photos to see if they will pay for it. Going on 2 weeks at the dealership. No loaner cuz they haven’t determined its warranty work or not. After replacing transmission at 50k and now the engine. This is certainly my last ford.

it sounds like a diesel because the 5.0 is direct injected like a diesel. those are high pressure injectors and fuel rails.. most have padding over them to dull the noise... these 400hp 5.0 are not the same 1980's90's 5.0L 150hp engines we grew up around.

My truck sounds the same. The dealer says it’s normal. It didn’t sound like that a year ago. It was actually really quiet.

If you grow another foot maybe you can throw a 12 with the adults…

They claimed it was the high pressure fuel pump making that noise. Then they claimed it was a Tappet. Then it started burning oil. All before 20,000 miles. Had Ford trucks all my life, that one ruined it for me. Sold it.
