Really neat discussion. I just wanted to add a few things onto your discussion of Naruto's art. For one, I wouldn't say he uses a "simplistic approach" with his early designs. If you pay close attention, you can see a lot of detail is put into things like how clothes fold on themselves and hang off the characters. It becomes especially clear when compared to Bleach designs, which are long and slender, and so such details are generally omitted to maintain that "sleek" look. For another, you talk about how Kishimoto develops a stronger sense of perspective as the manga goes on, using the Sasuke vs. Kakashi interaction as an example. While I agree that this sequence is slightly more flat than later scenes, I believe that this is by design. In a lot of these earlier fights, Kishi's focus is on the choreography of the fight itself. We see a lot more panels dedicated to the individual steps of each sequences (from the wind up, to the flight pattern, the strike, and the follow-through), giving them this seamless, fluid quality. Trying to balance this complex choreography with super dynamic perspective is borderline impossible given the weekly release schedule. By contrast, those later fights like Naruto vs. Sasuke -- which AMAZING and definitely better overall -- don't use this same step-by-step paneling. Moreover, I don't think that this earlier style ever makes the paneling feel stiff. On the contrary, taking so much time to walk the reader through each and every movement allows them to more easily follow the flow of events -- which is exactly what good paneling should do.
i would of liked it if Uraume said something alone the lines of "you merely got lucky, if lord Sukuna had all 20 fingers, you would of had no chance" or something about him being slightly weaker without all 20 so they got lucky but thats me.
1) Jin knew who Hand of God was up to a nickname. It is expected to know he knows what expect from him as well in a sense. 2) Jin doesnt have too many problems dodging and "toying" with Mugen in a sense. When it becomes troublesome is when Jin actualyl tries to land a hit on Mugen where Mugen's advantage shows most. His unpredictablity shows not only in attack but also defense. Using his sandals, make shift shields from environment and just superiour dodging makes mugen is problematic target to even land a hit on, even if he messes up. 3) It is even shown in Hand of God fight where Karoya tried to land several hits on Mugen but the latter always noticed them last moment and managed to dodge. It would look like Karoya just messes with him but it was a fully prepared counter stance which tried to Catch Mugen on his own motion. While it looks like he is sure to beat Mugen and just spares him, throwing him off shore was the only quick choice Karoya had because Mugen would be a problem of other kinda later on.
It's disgraceful that Hakari had ONE good fight the whole manga. He's so entertaining and his CT is so creative but Gege could only spare us ONE good fight.
I have problem with the way they are portrait in the introduction of their characters and then how it went. Cuz Hakari is said to be Yuta level by everyone and every narrative, but when his fights are offscreen it seems like a stretch, while Uraume is straight up mystery no fights, no showings of their skill, but from how it went we must simply think (by narrative) that she is Kenjaku Level. But that is not the bigger problem it seems to me that Gege wanted to keep these OUT of the Sukuna raid. Cuz it will get too messy. Cuz Uraume probl can kill everyone in the Sukuna raid team, with one to three ice spears. Which will take from Sukuna's spotlight, so we can't have her here, and Hakari is straight up unkillable for current Sukuna, he won't do too much damage, but as it is implied he can stall the EOS Sukuna forever or for as long as the Sukuna raid team needs to recover, which make's for easy fight too, he can domain clash, and tank everything that Sukuna has to offer, which means for Hakari to be taken out, it will take an asspull which is not an option after the Gojo fight. Which leads me to conclusion that Hakari and Uraume were made as perfect counters, cuz if One of em were to join the fight of either side, it tips the scale tooo hard.
Hakari's job was literally stalling. Why would we watch that whole thing play out rather than the actual plot specific one going on with Sukuna. Sure it would've been cool but it really doesn't matter much.
iraumeuraume killing herself also felt like a fumble, they straight up only exist to glaze sukuna, which is very disappointing that there wasn't anything that could be done for the character herself
How entertaining could constant jackpots for 100 chapters straight be? It would just be boring and needlessly extend the series, this is to say I’m fine with how it turned out, but it could have been done better and this was the easiest way for this fight to play out
What I find bullshit is that such a seemingly strong character like Uraume has no background, no consistency and no motivation behind them. All reincarnated sorcerers from the past thought of themselves to be the epitome of jujutsu sorcery. - Reggie - Kashimo - Ryu - Uro - Yozoru Had a certain charm to them. And Uraume essentially wants to be nothing but suck off of Sukuna’s praise. A character more used as a plot device. Remember how nitpicking Gege was about Kenjaku? He clearly didn’t want to face Gojo of all people but was still above most of the cast. While weaker characters than Hakari fought Sukuna and went out. Bruh, couldn’t Gege just give the feat of killing Uraume to Yuta, Maki, Higuruma, ect?! Sukuna didn’t really need Uraume at the end.
huge thanks for the super chat ur the first to do so,been super busy so i just saw this, and yea i 100% agree with what ur saying gege had the chance to make uraume a lot more interesting but dropped the ball completely. especially when compared to most of the older guys which sucks because hakari happened to match up with them and ultimately got shafted

I feel like the absolute best thing that should have happened would have been hakari just grippin her by the arm or leg and dragging her into sukunas domain outhealing his slashes while uraume just disintegrates and then he joins the sukuna fight

Wdym a perfect match? It was literally a loop with no winner in it. Hakari uses Domain > Uraume deals some Damage until his Jackpot runs out > Hakari uses his Domain once again and it all repeats in a cycle that will end only after Uraume just kills herself
I would have much preferred a whole chapter dedicated to their fight, where they can either talk smack to each other or engage in actual debate, the person winning the debate being the person who comes out on top at the end; considering Hakari is a surprisingly deep thinker with his own complicated ideology like what he shared with yuji; an aspect I’d love to see more of from him. Even if this didn’t happen, I feel as if a much better way to cut back to the end of their fight would be after sukunas death. Where it’s revealed uraume is on the brink of death and hakari only kept her alive so she could see her “perfect” master die. It would be much more satisfying to not only have an actual conclusion/winner to the fight, but would also just fit right into hakari’s more subversive personality as a sorcerer. Side note: hakari vs sukuna is something I personally feel we were robbed of.
im hoping mappa or whatever company animates shinjuku showdown does hakari vs uraume more justice. alot of companies have done extended cuts before so i don't see why they couldn't do the same for hakari v uraume
Nah it wasn't disappointing it was concluded they were just gonna non stop fight until ura died, the only reason kashimo was close was because of his speed but the infinite rct is unbeatable and this fight wouldve been a boring match since hakari and ura are already at their max potential
I always thought uraume had potential to be a cool character. The only person who had stayed by sukunas side. The closest thing that he has to a relationship and we got nothing.
Honestly. A cut away every 5 chapter to see some move would be nice. Hell, i would have loved if Sukuna domain was used as a factor in their fight before the Todo reveal. As they both fight around that zone as an attempt to wipe out the other.
i know gege isnt one to write fights that have an over-arching theme all the time, but i really think this fight wasnt necessary to show. theres no conflict of ideals or big picture going on w these two. this fight is the first time they meet. Now, obviously i wouldn't mind seeing more fights. It wouldn't have hurt to see an actual fight with these two, but ive noticed gege doesnt like to show the same thing twice when it comes to the socerers. Todo came back with a new gimmick, yuta came back with a gimmick, hanami and jogo got offed when they had nothing new to show. Uraume's cursed technique didnt seem something that was entirely interesting. Gege could've pulled a hanami-esque technique with multiple different attacks, but obviously, gege didnt want to do that. It sucks the fight didnt happen, but i think i understand why it didnt.
I don't wanna hear the "ohhh but most fights aren't as indef in the manga compared to the anime." Kenjaku vs Choso and Yuki, Yuta vs Ryu, Cockroach, and the sky bender. Yuji vs Mahito all were extremely well done
i dont mind really. id we were interrupted with that fight while yhe main fight in such tight spot everone wil be complainign abotu the fiht ruthm being ruined
