@@dazzarawlins2738 originally had a knock, on stripping it down the conrod bearing in cyclinder 5 had burnt out from shards of metal stuck in the oil feed through the crankshaft.
@@dazzarawlins2738 I should have removed the crank pulley when the car was in the engine, couldn’t see another way to do it. I don’t like spending the money on specialised parts if it’s possible to make something. It’s helped my welding a lot and it’s more sense of achievement.
@@dazzarawlins2738 Yeah man gas less flux core - been on it for days because I only get to do an hour here and there as I work 2 jobs. Going to try using Gas but I’m not a welder and don’t really know what I’m doing :) just having fun and trying to save this car on the cheap
In the states we do call it a valve cover… I’ve also heard rocker cover… all the same bro we know what you mean. Cheers to you for documenting this whole process on all these Mk4s you’ve got. I think they are pretty simple to work on. I have 3 1.8ts in mk4 and a VR6 but that’s in a Touareg so lots of space in the bay. They are pretty crammed in the mk4…
@@JoelCaseyJonesMusicI have never worked on a 1.8T but I can imagine it’s similar to my old 2.0TDI A3. The only issue I have found with the VR5 is the lack of space along the rad area
I'm no expert but I think you've made a mistake adding the polyurethane resin, the vibrations are going to annoy the hell out of you. Still, you live and learn they say 😊👍🇮🇪
You are doing great with the welder you've got, i know they are frustrating to weld with But welding in shorts and tee shirt is a really bad idea, the uv light from welding is worse than the sun for your skin. I bought a finger sander from screwfix and it is much better/quicker than the dremil in most area's, any one will do. You still haven't got a brass wire brush, i find it cleans the welds up so you can see exactly where to build your next tack weld ( if that makes sense) before I got the brush I was just stabbing in the dark blobbing shitty welds onto shitty welds, hope you get something from my comment, I'm only an amateur but at 56 I've picked up lots of experience.......
Ok please don’t do all this hard work saving the shell to not pull the engine cover and replace the chain and guides at least. Those get forgotten and are the reason you see these in the scrapyard. It’s really a great engine if you maintain it and feed it 91octane and full synthetic oil every 5k. EDIT: I see you are pulling the engine (worth keeping IMO so that’s awesome) so def pull the valve cover and do the Chain and guide service, I’d even say pull the head and replace the pistons for forged. Set and forget for another 200k mi

Turn the wire speed down and more power output you want more heat I think I kept blowing wholes like you did would annoy me so much but might mate said turn the speed down and I was getting some better welds ended up making a back box delete 😂
You're doing great, feck them shelving units 😂 they are like meccano sets, built from the lightest shite possible 🙄 You are getting better with more practise, the die grinder bits are class, just watch your eyes. Paint bonda primer directly after welding or you'll be just sealing in the next batch of rust 😭
Don't worry about the comments, no one was born a welder - everybody has to learn somehow, the welding will keep getting better with practice and more prep will help
From your previous video your welder is up too high and possibly your wire feed is too slow. Also the sif should be spot or plug welded under the rubber seal. The repair will be really weak how it is.
Thanks mate - I have the welder on the lowest settings but will try a faster speed. I’m no professional and the car was going to be scraped, just seeing what I can learn and I do appreciate the advice.
@leoncosterbmx9101 no worries. I'm not a professional but do quite a bit of car related repairs. If you can get a gas MIG welder you will make you life a lot easier too. The flux core is of for heavy duty steel but thin body panels aren't ideal.

Id suggest drilling bigger holes and to puddle weld through and less of them, try also flap disc the surface of new sill to remove zinc coating, will give you a much cleaner better weld !
I'm only an amateur but i think your holes for plug welding are too small. I did this before and the welds didn't hold. Also it would have been good to clean the metal as much as possible and spray some weld through primer on any bare metal otherwise it will rust immediately 😢 I use red "bonda primer" on any metal after welding and its good stuff. Paint it on with a brush. It's available in Halfords 👍😁🇮🇪
Aup mate subscribed and watching closely as I’ve got a mk4 golf v5.. it sounds like your in tank fuel pump is struggling mate to be honest. I reckon most likely that.

@@leoncosterbmx if you ever get the chance to you should try to do this again and then re tighten the spokes. I think you could probably get it to still be rideable with just 10 if not less without a puncture
