Very nice comparison. Thank you. Prado - Urban Sketching . I do a lot of urban sketching so I don't have all day for things to dry or a need for large washes. I find the Prado to be the best for "u-sketchers". The #6 draws thin lines like a #2 & it doesn't put down too much wetness. Perfect for everyday watercolor sketchbooks ... made for quick and light on the go. Versitil- I don't have one yet however, my buddies who use gouache love it. The most purchased because it can be used with various mediums. Folks using acrylics travel too.😊 Perla - Plein Air. Juicy and excellent thin lines. Too juicy for my particular sketchbook style. But excellent for blocks where I use more water & painting painting out and about. It's a beast. Ultimo - Plein Air. Washes and such. Great synthetic squirrel. Thanks again.

I love my standard tin! I got it with paints that are from Korea and for a beginner like me they're just fine. The colours are very bright. I paid under $30 Canadian which I considered a real deal. I am adding an extra row in the centre of paints that are made here in Canada and only $4 each, excellent quality.

I've been using the Cotman watercolors for 45 years, professionally and for just for sketchbook fun, I have tried other "professional" brands that have different qualities here and there, but rely upon my Winsor and Newton Cotman paints day in and day out like a familiar and reliable friend.

The first time I encountered one of these Robertson paint boxes was in a workshop with Charles Reid in 2018. i was smitten. i bought my paint box three years later in 2021 from the Little Brass Paint Box Co in the UK, all the while asking myself, what are you thinking? Thank you for this video. I'm an artist that has been afraid to mess it up. I just ordered a spare palette pan and the cleaning soap you recommended. Now I am all set to fill it up for a workshop coming up in two weeks. The box is lovely to look at, beautifully designed, and I can't wait to enjoy painting from its palette!

💡I once had the WN “all-in-one kit” which went missing whilst travelling. When I replaced it, I chose to purchase the less costly WN Cotman version ($74 vs $21 USD). As I have my own palettte of DS artist paints, I gave away the included Cotman half-pans. The boxes are identical except for the colours. If you don’t care about appearances (dark blue vs. all white), the Cotman version is a nice money-saving alternative.

Nice video. What is the size of your bag? Looked it up on Amazon and they had two sizes, a 14" and a 17". I was curious about what the size your bag was. Thanks for the video.

I must try using staining colours in order to layer better. I often put some granulating colour down and the second layer just lifts it off. Though I tend to agree with Bruce MacEvoy on Handprint ‘luminosity myth’ that light doesn’t pass back through the paint matter and make it glow more.

Is that a 3.5 x 5.5 sketchbook? Something smaller? Just trying to get an idea of what will fit in that bag.

To solve the problem with non magnetic paletts, just glue a flat magnetic at the bottom of the palette and voilà you can stick the magnetic water reservoire to it.

I would say the Perla for details and the Ultimo for washes. A size 6 Perla and a size 10/12 Ultimo would be a nice versatile travel brush loadout. I have the Jackson Artica size 6, which is the Escoda Perla made for Jackson's by Escoda for lower price. I wonder if Jackson's has an Ultimo clone 🤔

The Jackson Artica travel brush is a clone of the Escoda Perla. It is made by Escoda, so you can get a "Perla" travel brush for a really good price that way. Same thing for their regular Articas. I have a bunch of them, and they are exactly the same. If only they held more water, they would be my "go-to" brushes...

I saw the #6 reserva at a good price (€36) and was tempted to buy but then I saw the animal abuse that goes into kolinsky now I'm leaning much more towards the versatil.

I know this video is 4 years old at this point, but the reason the paint "tins" are magnetic is because they are made of steel, not tin. That's why they rust if the enamel gets scratched. Tin is one of the group of metals that are not magnetic. At one time, cans of food and little boxes of mints or candy were often made of tin, so people called them "tins," and the name just stuck. These items haven't been made of steel for quite awhile (mid-20th century, I think). Some steel cans are alloyed or plated with tin to prevent rust, though - or galvanized with zinc. It kind of boggles my mind that tin is more expensive than steel, because the word "tin" metaphorically conveys cheapness and low quality, while "steel" conveys strength and solidity.
@arguchik
@arguchik 6 месяцев назад
P.S. I poked around a bit - it looks like many of these little mint boxes are indeed plated with tin. I'm guessing it's a really thin layer of plating, though, because these tins almost always rust eventually. I guess they only need to resist rust for the average length of time it takes a person to eat all the mints. 😀

what I learnt back in my days at art school was that when comparing synthetic to natural brushes your synthetic should be larger than your natural brush. Like that you'd find out how to make use of their specific properties. … there are various different kinds of apples out there, I guess ;-)

I still have a No. 250 that I bought in Tokyo in the mid-90s for 2200 yen, which then was around $18 - $20 USD. I kept the box to keep the palette closed due to it not snapping shut, and the pice sticker is still on the box. The corners of the wells have started to rust over the years, probably one reason why Holbein switched to aluminum. I ground off the rust using a Dremel tool and used some white Tester's enamel paint to cover the spots. I'm going to Japan in June and hope to pick up one of Holbein's new plastic palettes that has customizable half and full pans.

Joe Miller, from Cheap Joe's...fun fact: I was ordering from him when he was sending out a catalog that was copied on a Xerox machine and hand-stapled. They used to include all kinds of freebies back then. I even may have had a hand in helping him start his "Brushes for Vincent" project WAAAAAAAY back when. This was fun. Gotta love watercolors on the go 😎

thank you for the comparison. fyi anna bucciarelli did a detailed comparison of the reserva vs versatil. in trying to find the video, i searched sable vs synthetic watercolor brushes & saw several other YT comparisons of various brands which i intend to watch. i enjoy watching the demos to help inform me of what i may like to try. i know that in the end, the choice is personal.

enjoyed the comparison. i noticed Blick carries an Escoda Signature Set #1 for Joseph Zbukvic. 3 Perla brushes - round 8 & 12, and a travel round 10. msrp $85.03, the usual sale price of $62.12 which sounds reasonable to me.

Saludos.
