The Northern Angler is a small, independent fly shop located in Traverse City, Michigan. We have a passion for teaching and want to be part of your next adventure.
Hey brother, great video but you need to really tone down on the really. Minor thing to say for sure because your content is great but just something to consider. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Love when i find a video featuring Alex Lafkas, his flies have resulted in some quality browns for me from some of New Zealands best waters! And from some of the craziest places!
Who tf needs 3 fly boxes in the water? What is more important: Can I fit one fly box, pair of gloves, my phone, pliers, nail trimmers and a plastic bag for the fish I just caught...
I tend to let the line go completely when I shoot line and it ends up tangling around my reel and rod, I need to get better at utilizing the "OK" sign.
I was recently at the northern angler in Northern michigan, and purchased in riversmith quiver which Matt took the time to install professionally for me. We spoke about these new waiters and I'll be purchasing some as I am highly impressed with this company with this company if you're looking for a pair give these guys a call and they are top-notch and have become my go-to fly shop for all my needs. I've been all over the country fly fishing and visited many fly shops and this one is top-notch!
Damn. he did it again! When Russ tied in the piece of foam, I'm going, "He's done, and this is the first time EVER that Russ hasn't crowded the head". WRONG!! He then proceeds to tie in 3 more materials! He is the master of the "Thumb Push". He always seems to squeeze in a lot more, even when it looks like he is out of Real Estate.
When I watch Russ' videos, I think back to all the anal-retentive guys I've known in fly fishing over the years. He would absolutely drive them NUTS. It definitely would kill them to think of tying each fly a little different from the last so that none of the flies in his box are exactly alike. Thinking of flies in terms of general platforms rather than exact patterns would not be something they could accept, I'm sure.
I have been all over the country visiting fly shops . I've been to the best of them . Recently ( being from northern Michigan) I finally visited the northern angler to introduce myslef. From the time i came through the door i felt as if i were in my own living room visiting family members. The service I received was unprecedented, and very professional. After recently moving to Traverse City from Petoskey I will be visiting the shop often.
I have been tying the same fly for years, but I have never used or considered a dubbing loop. Personally, using good hares ears, brushed out works very well and saves the aggrevation of the loop. Just my opinion after 20 years of tying this pattern.
Love these tutorials! Not a bunch of over-hyped music, that classic YT "Hey, what's up guys?!?!?!?!?!" jock-talk.........just simple, honest, mature instruction that everyone can follow!
I realize that I’m just learning to tie, but why wouldn’t you use a dubbing loop on the material in the front and preen the fibers back instead of having all that material pull away as waste other than your method may be faster?
Can these brushes be made with thread or dental floss spun in a rope instead of wire as well instead of trying to put multiple layers in a dubbing loop?
Wow ! Being new to fly tying/fly fishing, I’ve only tied 5 patterns over the last year but watched close to 500 videos and truly loved finding your channel. Your format made me feel like I was in the room with you shooting the breeze. Which for me, made me more relaxed and actually helped me retain and understand each of the steps Lance was using and the why’s. That truly helps my extremely analytical brain. I’m definitely gonna be a regular watching your content. Mega Thx !!!
You guys are great.. I absolutely love your life story and I was just talking to my buddy yesterday here in Petoskey about how you are a true fly fishing store.. I appreciate everything you have done for us throughout the years .. on another note do you have any oval colored shooting line available?
