Milanese here. Boniek played for 2 of my home club's rivals but whilst I was too young to remember his years with Roma and Juventus, my granddad hated himself for admiring him. My granddad died at 102 but whenever international games or tournaments were on, he would always ask about how Poland did. Poland basically became his second team because of Boniek.
This is before he moved in defense and invented libero position . At wc 66 he was playing holding midfielder, scored 4 great goals and led the team to the final being one of two best players of the tournament. This is one of the reasons why it is ridiculous to compare any defender like Maldini to der Kaiser.
If Man City did this this type of stuff today they'd be calling for Guardiola to receive a knighthood. It's amazing how much any half decent move gets' lauded today. We call it "Pep ball", or "Ange ball", which is embarrassing actually. Real football was back in these eras, especially international football, which is of a very poor standard today.
Very civilized of the French to jeer and boo our national anthem. Before the game their press was equally "classy" when writing about our national team. In the end they ALL got exactly what they deserved. Ohlalalala :-) Although I was delighted for us, it was a pity we never saw the likes of Cantona at WC94 and - yes - Ginola too, who, despite what everyone says, was a fantastic player to watch.
This is back when the star had to show up in the big game, no Eder, no di maria, this is when 2-3 billion eyes were on one man, and he had to deliver. Like a maradona or pele.
