Thanks for the video. The inquiry based learning will definitely be better for my humanities students. The differences are interesting. I use PBL for my junior classes!

The thinking routines are consistent with design thinking : See (discover), think (define), wonder (develop). Using this thinking routine with the question "what makes you say that" can really help students gather evidence to make good decisions for themselves instead of relying on teachers to provide the correct answer. Thank you for the insightful podcast!

I love this conversation. I am still a student, working to get my degree in education (so you can take my thoughts with a grain of salt). However, I think that it is important to use both explicit instruction and student-inquiry. They both have their place. For example, you should teach the concept of multiplication if it is first being introduced, and then plan a project where multiplication an option for solving the problem (I.e. a project to select and purchase a class pet and it’s supplies). We need to be explicitly taught much of the content so that we have the background information needed to come to our own conclusions using different strategies. How else would we have the academic terms for the act of multiplying?

I wasn't able to watch all the sessions. I paid the fee for the conference but was hoping to watch it later. When I went to check it there is now a payment asked for. Almost 100$. I am disappointed I didn't see that there was going to be such a large fee to watch missed sessions. Thank you for your consideration to give me a few days to watch the missed sessions. Have a great day.

Hey Kari. Recordings were available as part of your $2 fee for 7 days after the conference. Access to the recordings for longer requires further expense on my part hence the larger fee to access recordings for 12 months. Sorry for any miscommunication that may have occurred along the way.

Setting up the classroom - my question relates to the secondary situation, where I do not 'own' a room, and share it with others. How do I promote this concept of literacy - collaborating with the students to give them this feeling of ownership. Given also that it is not 'their' room either, it's shared with numerous other classes.

Hi Barbara. Try and have the students collaborate on how the classroom will run rather than what it looks like. Will they line up outside, stand behind desks and wait to be greeted or walk in when they get there and find their own seat? You could also collaborate on how they will learn, the context they apply the content to etc. You are basically building in student voice about the class and learning right from the beginning and giving them the opportunity to contribute. This will also allow you to see them communicate, work as a team possibly and help you to get to know your students at the start. I hope that helps Dan
