I went to a game as a kid. Daryl Strawberry hit a home run and the Apple broke halfway up. I saw a guy smoke crack and got hit in the head with a quarter. My dad got our butts back to Ct. Fast. Lol
They should of kept shea stadium and the old yankee stadium and made them into a stadium museum like for fans to walk through and see what it looked like if they haven't been there before. Well shea stadium was a round since the 60s and the old yankee stadium was around for a long time but in the 1975 season they just renovated it!
My first game at Shea was May 1996, the memories in this stadium go along way! I still havent forgotten this place, a dump.... my dump! Which had given me many memories! Please people check out my NY Mets season documentary videos!
I was at Shea Stadium on September 6,1986. The New York Mets played the San Diego Padres. Another one of the Mets' wins that led to the World Series shortly thereafter.
Shea Stadium first place I ever saw a MLB game back in 1965. Mets vs Dodgers. Don Drysdale vs Warren Spahn. Drysdale broke up a one to one tie by hitting a home run in the 7th inning. I'll never forget Shea
I still haven't been to Shitty Field even though it's been 3 years since my beloved Shea was demolished...I don't like the stadium,I don't like the team,I don't like the owners. The Mets just as well as moved..Ahhh to go back a few years.Just more more night game at Shea...sigh.
@fdny442 Yeah, hey, let's all go to a ballgame to sight-see. Let's all go to a ballgame to check out the large team stores and the shake shacks! Hey, every now and then, we might even look down unto the field to see what's happening in the game. The fewer number of seats certainly does determine the way a place sounds... Citi was constructed with over 12,000 less seats. These seats came out of the upper deck. Field level seats in Citi, though, increased. Real fans are scammed. Noise level down.
@jericho360 Shea was the Mets. CitiField is named after a faceless corporation and modeled after an old stadium of another team that is still actively playing on the West Coast. The Wilpons were Dodgers fans as kids and so they knocked down the Mets home in order to erect a monument to another team. When the Dodgers play at Citi Field the Mets should wear their away jerseys. Shea stadium used to rock.. literally rock.. during big plays. I agree with you... Citi field is neutered in comparison.
I remember in September, 1973, there was a "Shea Says Goodbye to Willie Mays" night, when WIllie received a motorcycle for his son, and then gave flowers to Mrs. Joan Payson. Now, Willie says goodbye to Shea. Somebody needs to post some classic Mets games, like the '73 season.
What a great video! This really brings me back. My sister and I sat in Loge section 21 for years, and as such I am well familiar with this route you took. This brought me right back there. The feel of the floor beneath my feet, even the smell of the place.....thanks for the memories.
Seaver, Piazza, and a Beatles' song... The perfect way to Shea Goodbye! (I miss it... I live in California, and I always thought I'd get to see one game at least there...)
Yes it is stupid, there is no comparison to citi and shea number of seats down to square footage determines the way the place sounds and plays, and there are things to do at citi , unlike shea, people are up and about half the game checking it out and sightseeing, give the place a chance. One day youll be telling your kids about all the memories from citi . Be good
That's a little harsh; blaming the stadium for the fans' sudden rejection to, as the classic song goes, "root root for the home team." I understand how you feel, but I would just blame the fans and not the Mets' new home. I wonder if the fans at the new Yankee stadium are behaving the same way.
