If they are dangerous it also means they are effective. Train them but make sure you understand cautionary details and then take care of each other in training.
Rubber guard is useless and leglocks are cheating move. Only thing that works at high level BJJ is strength ,superior athleticism. And last but not the least is the secret sauce vitamin S.
For 99.9% of us, this is a hobby. Even if we compete. And it ain't worth the leg lock bs. If you go for a heel hook, you will get a Muay Thai lesson immediately
In other words, its a low percentage technique. But there are a lot of low percentage techniques that even Rickson teaches such as the Americana. That doesnt work past white belt. That doesnt mean its a bad technique theres a time and place.
I always think about what I would rather lose, a leg or an arm. It's got to be the legs, it would change so much more to have no hands. The most dangerous thing in bjj and all other wrestling sports is when people fall on top of each other.
The Brazilians saw leg locks in Brazilian Catch Wrestling (Luta Livre) and saw them via Ivan Gomes who was a Judoka and Catch Wrestler. Sambo learned their leg lock game from Catch Wrestling. Sambo is literally CaCC plus Judo.
So did Rickson about a million times without Rubber Guard. Remember Ricksons focus is always on the best techniques for the weak and unathletic. So it’s 100% predictable that he doesn’t endorse specialty moves that require very specific physical attributes.
How I know if somebody is an asshole grappler or an amateur is if they allow for leglocks or not. When I've trained with high class grapplers if you went for a leglock we would IMMEDIATELY tap & give you your pathetic win, then refuse to EVER grapple with you again. They're so dangerous. You DON'T KNOW when your knee will suddenly give out & then you're fucked. Want a limp & a hard time walking for the rest of your life? If yes, then grapple with assholes that allow leglocks. Otherwise them allowing leglocks should be a red flag for you to run out of that studio. Otherwise like I said enjoy your eventual jiu-jitsu of honor with a blown out knee for the rest of your life.
The figure 4 leglock is the winner everytime, only true masters know this deadly technique. Grandmaster rick (the nature boy) flair is a true legend of the figure 4 leglock that Mr gracie and Mr rogan are discussing.
Sorry I respectfully disagree with Rickson Gracie. It was booed just like Joe said. They did call it cheating. It was the Brazilians' close-minded thinking that kept the leg locks from growing. It did seem like cheating, because if your opponent didn't know it, they would easily get tapped. A black belt could easily get tapped out by a white belt when it came to leg locks. Now everybody recognizes that it's not that that easy if both grapplers understand the leg lock, just like anything else in jujitsu. Most Jiu-Jitsu techniques appear to be easy when the opponent knows nothing about them. The difference is that when they escape the technique and you are on your guard, they will be back in a strong superior position. Leg locks are much more difficult to escape. Keeping a strong and powerful opponent from escaping and getting back up. The one thing I do agree on, and this goes for every technique, including leg locks and neck cranks, is that if you hurt people at a gym, you won't be allowed to use that technique. I always taught students techniques that were very dangerous. Heel hooks, neck cranks, Kimora or shoulder locks. Everybody should be taught at a gym to train with control. As far as competitions go, the full arsenal of submissions should be opened up by purple belt. If you make it to purple belt, you know what's dangerous and what's not dangerous and you know better. It should never be a situation where a black belt is getting finished by a white belt just because he doesn't have leg locks or takeouts.
