All solid points, a nice story to show how to be successful with starting a small business - BUT this video is basically an advertisement for the "Shave Ice Academy" that this guy is trying to sell to ppl. I totally understand it, but as I'm trying to budget things I can probably figure all of this out by research + asking questions to a few people I personally know who own a business. The ONE thing I do wish I had was a mentor from someone who grew up around an authentic Hawaiian shaved ice business. A mentor who understands how to really do things with something, who has something like a family recipe. (not saying this guy doesn't know what he's doing, but as he said, he also came into the business as an entrepreneur. I'm searching for the true authentic Hawaiian feel.
How dependent is business when it comes to seasons? I wanted to start a shaved-ice business in southern california but I wasnt sure how much the sales change when the weather isnt +80 F
Hey, I just purchased a machine. I love shaved ice and one of my favorite places uses Real fruit concentrates with 100% cane sugar and no corn syrup. I’m waiting to either source something similar or make my own concentrates. Do you have any recommendations?
Freeze cups, no ice needed. 9oz cup, I sell for $1 cost me .19 to make. No equipment to buy. I only sell em at work, about 50 per day. Seems profitable.
Do the same thing, but instead of using one chisel as a wedge, use two across the surface of the ice. Instead of splitting with one solid swing, give it some light taps on both chisels. That way you're more likely to get a get clean cut. If that's what you're going for.
I got the cheap one. It can do a school play day. I bought for just kids party's. But now there older. 10 years later. We used in cheer fundraising and even at a fair. No problems. It buy 10 $200 machines. I'd never get a swain design. Get the block ice style thats 2k and less ice problems
Curious, perused the video twice, thought you may go over best hours for a shaved ice truck. Anything to share on that? Would appreciate your knowledge on this.
I’ve used both and the Swan is definitely a better machine. But for the money the snow cub can’t be beat. It needs a foot switch though. Mine didn’t come with on, but I’m sure they are available somewhere.
11:00 a breakdown of how a friend started their business. 13:50 they use gofundme preparing to open their first brick-mortar store. 15:30 points that Shaved Ice Scott wants us to see.
Hi Scott! Thanks so much for all of the experience you share with the community. We are getting closer and closer to opening. We are starting with a table and tent before purchasing a trailer if we find out that we love doing it. I am going to take your advice and set up a free day. We live in a new construction neighborhood in Wesley Chapel that is mostly young families and we live on a large corner lot. I am thinking of setting up in my driveway, posting on our community Facebook page and encouraging the neighborhood to come out and meet our business as well as meet their neighbors! It sounds like a great way to bring everyone together. Thanks again - I really admire you!
Hey I am trying to to start a shaved ice business just on weekends as a side job is it worth buying the commercial swan shaved ice or should I just go with the snow cub if I am only doing two days a week? Also thanks for making these videos they are super helpful!
I would start with the Snow Cub. If it grows into something more, then you can later invest in a Swan. You can find them here: www.amazon.com/shop/mr.scomo/list/3428TBRJ7IWA9?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsflist_aipsfmr.scomo_J7FRA83B6E0RYF8G87TH
My opinion is if you're only doing this on the side, either one of the machine here will work, if you're going full time with it and getting really busy and can justify the price then I'd go with a swan. It doesn't hurt to get started on one of these machines as the author of the last comment said and once you're busy enough you can go ahead and invest in nicer equipment.
Thanks so much for all your content. I've heard a lot about how the quality of the ice influences how the shave ice tastes. Do you have any advice/comments on the best quality water to use to make good quality ice for good quality shave ice? :)
Extremely deceptive video. Why? •note minuscule ice block on $200 machine vs HUGE block of ice on $2K machine. 🤔🤔🤔. 20LB $200 machine will shake / vibrate off counter in 3 secs. This guy is an obvious shill for cub. I’d never support his business as he’s inherently dishonest.
lol ... I'm certainly not a shill for Cub ... or Swan for that matter. I have no relationship with either to them. I owned a Shaved Ice business for years and have personally made thousands of cups of shaved ice with both machines. Both machines fit about the same size block of ice (a 10lbs. block cut in half). It's the only way to use them.
First training, we just bought property with a shave ice business. It is at the start of our local rail trail and has the local city park across the street.
Been looking for a machine that I will only use maybe 2 or 3 times a year for PR events and home shows, and I think this video helped me decide which one to go with, thank you
