Hi John, I really like the way you teach drawing. Can you please help me with drawing lotus flowers? Do you have any video of drawing lotus flowers. Thank
What a joy to be able to follow such a fantastic tutorial. I havent been able to get myself to draw anymore for many months now, but this was so pleasing to follow along and I'm so happy wirh my bird.
Thanks so much for this Jack! I love my nature journal! I’m looking forward to the Wild Wonder art and nature online workshop in September! Plus I’ll be signing up for the educators workshop as well😊
I’ve been nature Journaling for a few years now. You have taught and inspired me to look at nature differently than I was. My journals have gotten better and more interesting. One thing that I add to all of your teachings is I listen to nature. I write down what I hear around me when I’m in a certain place. I have discovered many birds in my area. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
Such an amazing summary of this process! Nature journaling has changed and is changing my life as well in wonderful ways. Thank you so much for all you are doing to spread the word, to teach, to engage people,... You are a blessing, Jack!
although i love birds and can identify many by ear, i never could make myself just sit down and memorize the names of all the anatomical parts of birds. This lesson was a perfect mixture of art, birding, and educational information so i FINALLY was able to pay attention and learn the names! i'm also new to watercolour so the end was a nice treat as well 😊 thanks for this!
My question is I just ordered the laws guide to nature journaling I haven’t got it yet does it have either way of his way to draw a bird? If so is it the old or the new?
Hi! Jack published that book several years ago, and he is continually refining his techniques, so this video has his very latest approaches. That book, however, has 95% of the same info...he has just made a few tweaks to how he starts drawing the bird, which he demonstrates in this video.
Observation like this is how species get discovered and we get back to our need to explore. I think we forget that we're animals that are meant to have animal behavior, and one of those is curiosity.

This was a "WILD" and WONDERFUL tutorial/presentation! As a birder and retired teacher, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! I am also a huge fan of John/Jack Muir Laws who is an outstanding and inspirational teacher, artist and scientist! We are so privileged to be able to follow him here on the internet, you tube and the website. I will definitely spread the words to current teachers and all the nature lovers out there. All the best and thank you!
This was an amazing tutorial! We are so privileged to be able to watch, re-watch and learn from a great master. Thank you for making this video available, and for making the world of birds so exciting!
What an enjoyable and giving personality. I so appreciated his instruction. Thank you for making this available. I teach art to children and I will pass along some of this knowledge to young artists. Thank you again.
I love the way you are with birds, but with kids even more. I have an intense relationship with birds, I both love and fear them. The flying dinosaurs .
John Muir Laws is an incredible teacher for breaking down the elements, components and proportions and angles of birds. I'm thrilled with my beginning results and want more
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it. Check out our events calendar as we have another class coming up with him soon on how to draw insects! www.wildwonder.org/store/p/draw-insects
Thanks for your question--no there is not a way to access those pages with this design and folding method. If you have a suggestion of a different way to do it, we'd love to hear from you! :)
This Zine is wonderful. I'll be meeting a group of Chinese adventurers on a trip to Antarctica next week and will share the zine in their language. I'll pack some English versions for fellow American explorers. #PointBlueConservationScience
I wish he had handled the question better. It seems like the light source, wherever that is, would be determining which edges are light and dark and there was no mention of shadows. In other words, i don't think defining form can be talked about without including light source.
Jack has several videos on drawing water AND I learn something new each time. A special thanks and 'kudos' showing how to tackle the complicated river scene. That was the great new thing I learned. When I saw the picture, I was immediately overwhelmed; his approach made it a lot easier. Thanks for sharing this post.
This will be a great teaching tool for my grandchildren to see the world of drawing in a hole new way. You have explained it so well. I love you tool clip it make is so visually accessible to see the shapes. Is it something I can get. Thanks so much from 🇨🇦
