Hi, did you apply 2 coats of paint or 1 coat? If not 2 coats, do you recommend 2 coats that do not affect the grain. You did a beautiful job. Thank you.
Hi there! So for this particular door we did a 1-1, so one coat primer, one coat top coat (paint) depending on how it’s applied you might need more, or depending on your prep work it might need another coat to get the sheen even and not splotchy
Well thank you for watching it! If you’re spraying the products I’m using in this video I would encourage not going smaller than a 10 orifice size, so with this Graco quick shot I use a 210 tip, on our bigger rigs I prefer a 310 or 410. If we’re spraying thinner products (industrial grade) we use 206, 306, 308, 408.
Haha thank you! If I remember correctly when we did this video I would spray, run outside and take a breath before I’d come back in and spray more, perks of filming and my respirator not making it on site
easiest doors to paint by hand. i only spray smooth doors. also bad primer for this use something like ben moore fresh start high build because it sands easier and powders up nicely
Anything is easy to paint by hand if you have enough time and don’t care about the finished product. Why would I use a high volume solid primer if I’m intentionally not flat sanding and don’t want to overfill the intentional embossed grain we bought the door for? We just wanted to increase adhesion, if we were going for flat we definitely would’ve went with a industrial coating but that defeats the whole purpose of these doors
Hey Ben! The quick shot is great for small projects, we use it often for on site touchups post install of countertops, trim, etc. if you dial it in I think you can get a great finish on cabinets, especially Spraying horizontally, spraying vertically is definitely more tricky but it can be done I think
I saw you say in another video comment that you use an industrial grade product to prime/spray your cabinets before painting them. What type of industrial primer do you use?
Hey Justin! We do. So for Industrial Grade Coatings we really like CIC Coatings 1108 and 1107 primers, their new Primer 1111 is a mix of both and is a great hybrid of both worlds I think
I just finished spraying 2 preprimed doors very similar to yours, except mine had no embossed grain. Instead of Emerald Urethane, which takes so long to cure, I used SW Gallery. The first door I sprayed when it was cold,( around 45-50 degrees), took a long time to dry. The second time it was warmer and dried much quicker. What I did not do was apply a primer since I figured the factory one was ok. I scuff sanded with Surf Prep pads and sprayed. The first door I sprayed with the QuickShot, like you, and the 2cd with a Kremlin AAA. Surprisingly, the QuickShot gave a better lay down than the Kremlin. Once all settled the Kremlin looked just as good, but it still surprised me it had an orange peel when I sprayed. I slightly thinned, maybe 5%, and still had orange peel. While the finish was good, I'm wondering if I should have primed like you did. I'll try that next time. Thanks for the video, always looking ways to improve.
Hey Wade, I appreciate the comment. SW Gallery is a great Sherwin product, we use it weekly here, the AAA Kremlin is a fantastic gun too, we normally are running big airless rigs or AAA when we’re doing our large projects but I bust out the quick shot for small projects like this here. Do you know how many wet mils you put on the door with both sprayers? In my experience that’s what gets me when I would get orange peel
I sprayed Gallery again over the weekend and it laid down a lot better. I think because it was warmer that helped. Also, when I cleaned the gun afterwards, I think I saw some built up 2k material from a previous spray that was partially clogging a couple of holes behind the air cap. I’m pretty sure it’s going to work a lot better next time as I’ve never had the Kremlin lay down anything but glass. I look forward to more of your videos.
Love to hear it, it’s crazy how much even a couple degrees will change how material lays down. Make you feel like you’ve lost the touch at times haha. Do you personally enjoy more of the woodworking or painting/finishing videos?
Hey there! I don’t understand all of the translation but it sounds like you’re saying we should hand sand instead of using our orbital sanders. I’m curious why you think we should do that if we need a surface to be flat so it can be primed and topcoated
Nice job Im getting ready to build a kitchen Island. One of my biggest decisions to make, is the number and size of drawers for the vertical height of the cabinet .
I will be doing Slab drawer fronts and slab doors, no hardware. I will back slope the top or the bottom of the door or drawer face, as a finger pull surface. We are shooting for a very modern clean look @@SupernalPaintingUSA
Love that, super popular right now. Have you thought about using Push to Open hardware instead of a pull notch? We do them both but I’ve really liked the Push to Open hardware lately
My favorite comment ladies and gentlemen right here. Haha no seriously though I appreciate that! Definitely an adjustment to speak to a camera lense. We’ve been filming so much recently I’m excited to get all these new videos up
Oh man it’s fantastic, I’ve used several inch calculators but this one is my go to, it should be on the Apple or Google store as Feet and Inch Calculator. It saves a ton of time for sure
Hey there! Yes this was a UV 1 Import Birch, so is the purpose to paint on the inside of the cabinets or outside of cabinets? my thoughts would vary pretty greatly depending on what part of the cabinet is being painted
Okay sweet, so painting UV coated side on the outside of cabinets is pretty simple, scuff sand it (but don’t burn through the UV coating, the surface will already be almost perfectly flat to begin with. Then like always prime it (we use industrial grade coatings for that but you could use architectural paint), scuff sand again and top coat. If you play your cards right you could be done with coating/painting it in two coats instead of three
Hi, I painted my splashback with a roller but near the window I had to use a brush as roller wouldn't fit.The brush has left streaks how can I fix this? It only has one coat! TY
Hey there! Sorry we're just now seeing this, in these scenarios we normally use a Artist brush and put 1-3 Light Coats, where we do one coat with the brush strokes going vertical and then one coat with them going horizontal and so on until the brushstrokes are minimal and aren't noticed. What did you end of doing to resolve the problem?
I did the same using the exact same products, but rolled mine with a thin nap foam roller. I had travertine tile which has a texture anyway. The SW enamel smooths out nicely as long as you maintain a wet edge... easy to do with a backsplash since it usually is not a large area. Three coats minimum. Wash the tile at least twice, once with a scrub pad making sure to get into the grout lines well and another with a white rag. Keep doing it until the rag stays clean. Final step was a wipe down with denatured alcohol just prior to primer. It is critical to get good adhesion. I'd also recommend a very light sanding of the Zinsser to remove any imperfections since it dries so fast and is tough to get a perfectly smooth layer. Came out beautifully and save $$$ over the pain of replacing the tile.
Nice try... Use a paper gun,i can't believe you would even attempt to spray without protecting the cabinets, and countertops.👎 It's probably because you don't wear a mask/respirator. 😷
Haha Right!? We knew we were going to Reface the cabinets, replace the countertops, and repaint all the walls, so masking wasn’t as crucial on this project 👍🏻
Then why would you tape at all? And don't you think it would be better/safer on your freshly resurfaced backsplash to do the demo before spraying? I can tell your new at it by the way you spray, let me know if you ever need any advice/help I will be glad to help. Treat everything like a Corvette,or a Cadillac. 😇
Didn’t want a lot of overspray that would make the kitchen unsightly while waiting on doors to be made. If our demo was sloppy? Then of course, ours wasn’t here. Appreciate the engagement boss
It’s holding up extremely well, we recently saw it in person and it looked like the day we did it, very uniform in color and sheen and no stains I could find.
Yeah it’s all good 🙏🏻 it does look painted for sure but in this case it wasn’t worth the 4-5 times as much money to have to heavily mask the granite, tear out the tile, replace the drywall, lay new tile, grout, etc. when we could do this in a evening and morning to mostly achieve brighter tile (white subway tiles) which was the goal
PRO TIP: Based on over 40 years experience painting everything from Nuclear plants to $10 million dollar homes. Do Not Paint tile......ever. It looks like shlit and will not adhere using any of the products available to homeowners.
@@SupernalPaintingUSA coating? i used the glaze removal? nasty stuff nasty to clean too but promised to remove the gloss from the tile surface and prep it and the paint was sticking too but then the peeling started maybe on backsplash youd have better luck since you're not walking on them but to paint tiles permanently ? i don't know if thats possible
Oh yeah the glaze removal hasn’t worked well from what we’ve seen. The only real good way to remove the gloss is to sand using a sponge to scuff the surface. However I wouldn’t paint Tiles on the floor. There’s not a great product on the market that can tolerate that much pressure on it daily that won’t compromise adhesion pretty quickly. You could maybe get a 2k Poly to stick but still iffy long term
You could try it, I doubt it would be adequate but you know what they say “necessity is the mother of invention” so you might find it works great 🤷🏻♂️
