Yes, Ralph Carmichael wrote for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, among others. I inherited this album from my Dad who bought it when it just came out. Lent it to a friend who was Music Director of the jazz station at UNT who played it many times on the air. We both agree it's the best thing Jack ever recorded.

Why this album is not universally regarded as one of the best jazz albums of the 1960s, if not all time, is beyond me. Stellar, innovative big band jazz as only Stan and company could deliver!

Bravo Terry! Great piece and what a great idiom/ensemble/medium. I thought I could detect a refined Kenton-ian aura from time to time. 😎 On a side note, that concert bass drum is a beast.

The great thing about this piece is its big and dramatic and sorrowful orchestral arrangement contrasted by the most mundane act of life in the lyric.

I’ve never ever heard this version before! Wow! I’ve only heard the big band version, not the jazz orchestra one like this, it’s all the melodical parts without the hustle and bustle sections, wow. They really made music so much better back then

Terry- The band sounds very good here. And despite the statement that the music isn't considered difficult, it's certainly does not leave the listener feeling that it's "dumbed down". About 1973?
@TerryVosbein

My guess is that this was recorded around 1970. But that is just a guess. I’ve performed many of these charts, and they are all a blast.

Hank Levy's heartwrenching tour-de-force in 11/4 time for Gary Pack of the Kenton Orchestra. The version Levy recorded with his own student orchestra featuring Bill Warfield is great too.
