Livingplaces is about places and events that are alive with a story to tell. From the river Nile, to the Chao Phraya River in Bangcok.
Newport to Venice, Cape Town to Cadiz.
Come along from canals to hot air balloons.

I don't know about getting lost, but the history and cultural knowledge sure helps. Plus Cambodians are the friendliest people.

Thanks for the onsite photos and the discussion of the reconstruction. I tend to agree that its much more helpful to see some of it reconstructed than just grey stones on the ground.

I think the Vanderbilts also had a mansion in New York city at one time, with the same African red "Numidian marble" interior, the foyer being paneled in the stuff with columns made of it topped off with gilt bronze caps. The black and white pictures don' t do it justice.

Why didn't you show one of the most beautiful rooms? The master bedroom with the burgundy embroidered canopy and curtains? It's my favorite part of the whole "cottage". Also the kitchen with the beautifully maintained copper cookware?

They're not cottages regardless the label they chose to slap on these mansions neither actually or virtually. I believe the word is gilded past not guiled. The name is Vanderbit not built and fyi Anderson Cooper ( CIA traine and CNN correspondant) is Gloria Vanderbilt and Wyatt Emory Cooper's (writer) son .

'Vanderbit' is just as wrong as 'Vanderbuilt' .... The name is VanderBILT. (Probably was a 'guiled' past... as it was hardly guileless.)

I work for the Preservation Society of Newport County in the early 1980s. I was employed at the Cornelius Vanderbilt Estate The Breakers. I attended a Christmas party at the William K. Vanderbilt estate Marble House held in the golden ball room. Living in Newport and working in Newport was such a magical time. I have never forgotten my life in Newport and I shall cherish it forever. I made wonderful friends there.

Did you really attend the Christmas party as a guest (like you would like us to believe) or did you work at the party serving guests? 😂

Good work with the commentary l like it thank you. Did you know there is a replica of this home build in Australia.I can see why it is magnificent and also has me pondering the very same question to build. Could you tell me more about the historic home of new port please? Who owns them, is it the national Trust? Is it likely any would be sold for the right check? Do they get passed down to family?

The height of garish and common, in the lowest of taste. This house is the nightmare of any architect: The New-Monied client who wants to a replica of something they saw in France, Greece, Italy and the like. Lumping several styles into one gauche building. And in case that fails to test your gag reflex, they coat the entire thing in gold leaf. So incult.

Nouveau riche vulgarians think ostentation, lots of gold, pseudo-french furnishings signify taste. (Ever notice they rarely try to emulate English Country House style? Not glitzy enough.)
