I wonder if he’s studied Edward Bernaise? Being at Oglvy, I’d expect it to be compulsory reading like it was for my Father. My father was a MadMan, based in Chicago back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s before starting his own very successful marketing and communications business. It was a very fascinating life growing up around some of the most famous and interesting people in the World. This gentleman reminds me of my father’s creative director.
I like Rory, but anytime I hear him talking it’s like I’m getting ADHD just because he can’t stay on a single subject for over 30 seconds 😂. Which is exactly what he has in common with another great thinker - Nicholas Nassim Taleb.
When it comes to interviewing successful people, one thing people don't get is how much easier it is for a smart person to succeed today. Conceptual work was done in my father's day, b1925, by people with, possibly university degrees, that only 3% of the people in UK had. So if you walked into an office you were potentially in competition with other 97 percentile IQ people. Today we, technically speaking have a lot of very stupid conceptual workers, particularly women. This is because 50% of the population goes to Uni, and for women they are about 60 to 40 percent of the population at Uni. This means you have women at the 40th percentile of IQ, best case, training for, and taking on conceptual careers. And these people are in competition with men who could be at the 60% of IQ, since there are fewer of them. Now a guy who is VC of an advertising empire, might be the old school 3 percenter, and whatever he thinks about the key to a career is as valid to that borderline disabled female conceptual worker as if he said it in Russian.
Wow, he was named the worst and fired, and he was able to re-apply and get hired? After talking to dozens of HR folks these days, the policy isn't to rehire that person. Regardless they reason they left.
If anyone wonders about the name of the brilliant interviewer, it's Carina Maggar* She writes books now too! _ *found that in one of the comments where she announced herself
Fascinating interview with a fascinating man. However, The Beatles produced some of the greatest music in 9 years and Rolling Stones have been around 150million years.
