Using tape does leave a ledge on the silicone that’s not too aesthetically pleasing imo. A proper caulking tool won’t but it takes practice especially where there’s gap variations.
Do not use tape because when you remove it you will have 2 edges that will be bacteria holders. After calking spray water or water with a drop of dish soap on both the backsplash and counter top, then spray your finger and smooth out the calk in about 5” strokes, then wipe your finger clean, then respray you finger and continue. Repeat until the desired width of calk you like.😊 When you don’t use water the width of the calk can spread too wide on both the backsplash and counter.
This product is awful. If you apply moderate pressure to the applicator to spread out the caulk it comes off the bottle. Not enough pressure and the goop just builds up on the wings of the applicator instead of where you want it. Once the bottle is about half empty the stuff won't come out at all. Biggest mess I have ever had in doing caulking.
It looks so easy on the video. I suppose I received expired tubes. I bought 2. The caulk is very hard to squeeze out. When it does come out, it has the texture of half dried Play-Doh. It doesn't even stick unless pressed onto the surface. Even on the hands, if a roll of clay-like caulk falls from the tube, it will simply fall hardly and keep its white worm shape. It's not sticky at all. It has a grainy texture. Kind of like fresh cheese! Boursin for example. Exactly like that! Having said that, I did end up removing the applicator tip and used my finger to apply the caulk around the toilet and on several inches around the bath in order to test it. The texture wasn't fantastic. However, I tried wetting my finger and the clay dissolved immediately and it became really smooth. Around the bath, I used the applicator tip after wetting the bead. It does a wonderful job at making a nice, straight line. But not when the caulk's texture is pasty. Only after I wet it. I let it dry overnight and I was surprised to find a smooth, silicone-like texture. I haven't tried pulling on it to see if it holds. I should try that. But wetting the paste fixed the unusable paste and the chemical reaction turned it into a real silicone overnight. The transformation amazes me! So all in all, I imagine the product is meant to be used in optimal conditions and perhaps there is an expiry date on the package. Maybe the product is sensitive to temperature changes : I am thinking it might have frozen during shipping at some point? I would be very curious and excited to try this product as it is supposed to be, fluid and fresh. Lepage has always been part of my life growing up. Their products were THE go to for any project. I want to believe this caulk is one that can be trusted. As fir my project, I will cut the tube out in order to reach the hard cheesy paste and do the whole bathroom. I really enjoy the bright white look of the very straight lines, something I never succeeded in obtaining while using a finger with typical silicone caulks!
I think that's kind of a problem with traditional silicone caulks too, if the product is too old then it's pasty and doesn't apply smooth like it should.
It says "Easy to Use in All Temperatures: -18°C to 60°C ". I used it in +2°C weather yesterday. At that temperature, it DOES come out of the tube, with great difficulty, and creates a bead but if you try to spread it on the surface with your finger or tool, it sticks to them and not the surface. So, if all you want is a bead, it's probably OK but you'll have a sore hand working the caulking gun!
Did not like this product. I tried using overhead. The stuff comes out unevenly and too fast. Then it becomes difficult to use because it's facing up and the product is at the bottom. It made a big mess to clean up. I'll be using caulking to fix it.
