She has a lovely timber but goodness gracious her technique is abysmal. She came to fame because she was banging the composer of The Phantom of the Opera her husband at the time. Talk about nepotism. If they had open auditions for the part of Christine they would have passed her without doubt. She can't sing high tones she relies on portamento to be able to reach the same tones it's very distracting. Portamento should only be used as a dynamic, not as a crutch to reach your head voice's high-range range. Support for the high notes is very iffy, there is no squillo. As a soprano a high C should be a tone that you can sing easily both forte and pianissimo, a true soprano has a lot more range above a high C allowing her to incorporate those dynamics, especially with a lyric voice.
There is more to love, So much more, Than simply making love -- That's easy. Gazing into eyes, Pretty eyes, Which could be any eyes -- That's crazy. Hands are just hands, A face is just a face ... They come and go -- They're easy to replace ... There is more to love, So much more, Than moon-struck escapades -- That's nothing. There is peace of mind, So much peace, In quiet company -- That's something. Everyone but him Seems wrong for me ... Every time I feel There has to be More ... If I could hear The music I heard then, I'd never let It fade away again ... There is more to love, So much more, Than simply making love -- That's easy. Gazing into eyes, Pretty eyes, Which could be any eyes -- That's crazy. Now each time Love reaches out to me, I can only feel There has to be So much more To love ...
This was recorded for her album "The Songs that got away" released in the late 1980s. Her voice was still very young here, which I personally love, as it still sounds fresh and incredibly light and ice-cold. That declined rapidly once she started to think it was a good idea to sound "opera" like by darkening her voice and using an odd technique. She should have stayed with her natural timbre, displayed here, and developed it. Could have been great. Her diction was and still is dreadful. Back then and now. It drives me mad when she sings in Italian. :D
@@rickrodrigues2219 Very classy of you my dear. It is about diction! Even in English Brightman can be (not always) rather unclear. It is a matter of technique.
I love Sarah's version very much. No matter what how Opera Gurus would critical about it. She is not an Opera singer that's why I am really appreciated with all she's done with all those Operatic peaces! if you know what I mean.
She had a very long history with Andrew Lloyd Webber (creator of cats, Phantom of the opera, jesus Christ superstar and more). They even got married at one point but went through a divorce in the 90's although it seems that they're on very good terms nowadays
Try this aria by Luba Orgonasova and see what you think of Ms Brightman's efforts. Luba is perfection and no warbling on the high notes and fudging the passagio.
