We are The Gaming Discourse. We mostly talk about video games. Tyler would like to have a sports podcast one day but that's on the back burner. We have a weekly podcast where we cover the week's news in gaming as well as opinions, essays and reviews about video games uploaded on a weekly(ish) basis.
Crazy that they eventually did come up with a solution to the long travel times that fits perfectly within the logic of the universe and doesn’t necessarily take away from any other part of the game. (I’m referring to SCO)
regarding the "change of scenery" (ancient civilizations in the first game while more "modern" scenery in the second one). I do not see it as a downgrade but I understand that my interpretation could be linked to the fact I live in Croatia... where the Croteam is based. In short: in the first game Athena had to face the fact she is a product of a long chain of civilizations that were born, grew and collapsed. The very same fact is shown in the finale: she stares at the ruins of the most recent one that collapsed, but she is alive and that matters. In the second game she we have to face the challeng of "reviving" her civilization that is DECAYING. Not yet gone. But on the path of fading. That feeling is perfectly represented but the Game art and architecture that is an echo of the art and architecture found in Croatia. "Brutalism" is a kind of aesthetic that was widely used during the communist regime in Yugoslavia. In the capital city of Zagreb many example could be found. Take a look online. You'll find the very same athmosphere and mood. Gigantic concrete structures decaying. Strange sculptures depicting spheres and geometric objects. It's all there... as testimony of a decaying piece of history that has its beauty and could be the seed of a new era... or the last remnants of something fading away.
This is a very interesting thought that I did not consider at all. Thank you for the comment! I plan on playing Talos 2 again one day and I'll keep your comment in mind when looking at the architecture.
After this video I have installed half Life 2 Vr Mod and OMG, never thought I would literally chill in the game. One of my fav games in VR is incredible. Thank you for this video. Now I will play HF 2 in VR and after that play Alyx for the first time :D
I've played every game except essentials, but from what i can tell on both videos everything he says is straight facts. and well interoperated. I mean to the point i questioned some of my in game choices; which for a +1000 hours sc guy is tough to do. tbh.
I did it for a short time. Was great but always sent with someone else. Like a race between each other and most of the time arrived second... Quite Boeing when the rescue was far...
I also like to run 4-2-5, i like having 4 rushing the passer for more consistent pressure, but having 5 defensive backs means pass coverage is usually locked up deep and on the sidelines. Then I like having my users, fast line backers, control the middle of the field.
Alyx having a slower methodical gameplay is fine. There is a limited amount of combine that you face and the inability to sprint is fine. Alyx is not Gordon ahaha. I found HL-A to be pretty good for what it is. The game itself is unique and honestly for better absorption of the detailed world, you'd want the player to traverse slowly.
Important Notes: -I expect this to be demonetized, but I try to make content without worrying about how RU-vid's broken systems will handle it. So if you enjoy our content, consider supporting us on Patreon! patreon.com/thegamingdiscourse -I said my offense uses a lot of hooks and curls, but after I was done with the video I did some Googling and learned the terms are apparently interchangeable. I always thought they referenced which way the receiver opened; hook for inside, curl for outside (like a hook/slice in golf). -There are official deep dives for CFB 25 (like the link below), and while they cover a lot of ground, they leave a lot of questions unanswered. -I said that a single loss can knock you out of conference title contention. This is technically true but it’s not a new thing. It’s a sentence I should’ve rewritten but it was too late when I noticed that. -When I said ‘underrated player’, it may have been more accurate to say that the player isn’t really interested in other schools. You can get a head start on players if you find and heavily recruit them early on. So it may not be so much that they’re underrated as they’re just uninterested in other schools. -Regarding the punter exploit: In the later NCAA Football games (not sure which ones), I believe the punter exploit was fixed by players being recruited as athletes if their skills were such that they could fit multiple positions. So if you made a punter with great QB skills, they would be categorized as an athlete rather than a punter, and their recommended position would be quarterback. None of this I know for sure as NCAA 10 is the last game I have from the series.
I wonder if you're gonna cover the books that tie into the games aswell. The main ones that connect are Conviction, Aftermath, and later Firewall and Dragonfire are Sarah's story.
I was saved by fuel rats years ago. Back when I was a noob, ground out a vulture via combat, then took a mission quite far away with the naive expectation that I would just dock at whatever nearby station the sytem had... only to find out there was no station, and I was flying without a re-buy. They fueled me up, taught me about fuel scoops, and helped me calibrate my map so I would have easier access finding fuel stars or at least routes that contained them. Never had an issue again, although my experience is still very limited. I'm still pre-engiennering all this time later, but have farmed out both cutter and corvette, but as I've recently gotten back into the game I remember the rats fondly and was pleased to see this pop up in my feed.
Half-Life: Alyx released already obsolete. The problem with this game is that BONEWORKS was released before and made it MUCH better. Half-Life: Alyx is basically a lesser version of BONEWORKS, that came from an indie company compared to Valve. So... Even if Half-Life: Alyx was good, it failed to be a masterpiece and to change the world the same way Half-Life did. Is the game bad? No. Should you play if you can? Absolutely, but the truth is that HLA isn't THAT much as people keep saying.
NOTE: We neglected to mention one source in the video: Marc Carig's story "Solving the mystery within Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball" in The Athletic. Links in the description!
I actually really liked the Enrica angle in Shanghai's version because of how abrupt it is. Sam basically uses her as cover for his exfiltration after snooping around in the JBA HQ and on his way back to his quarters he goes through her room. Right as you're about to be in the clear Enrica opens the door and sees Sam in her room with no actual reason for his being there. So he basically seduces her to conceal his actions. It's not the most fleshed out coruting or romantic in any way. It's just a means to an end, hence why I liked it. Sam's grieving his daughter, is angry at the world, and is undertaking a terribly stressful mission. With all of that combined it makes sense for him to casually just manipulate people. The scene itself is a bit abtrupt and Enrica is a bit too willing to let him in her personal space but I can write it off as her being attracted to him from previous interactions.
In my experience absolutely nothing of commercially available games came anywhere near Alyx. I absolutely feel it's the defining VR game the way HL2 was a defining PC game. In fact it's ruined other games for me. Really weird take, especially since HL2VR piggybacks off Alyx and doesn't have any vr-first designed features, like Alyx's power glove, it's all retrofitted.
HL Alex is in a different league, honestly what VR should be or better by now. But I can't deny being in HL 2 and seeing the combine in real scale. It's amazing, and the graphics hold up well in VR, almost like today's games anyways so I guess you can say it's still modern.
I'm still a huge advocate of slower pace stealth. But if you were to put the movement animations from Double Agent into Chaos Theory, I won't mind. That lunge sneaking walk just looks more realistic, trying not to produce foot noise.
There's also the hull seals! They do repairs out in space, so if a critical module breaks, and you can't do anything, they'll drop by and fix you up, much in the same vein as the Rats
Two quick notes: -At the beginning, I say 'Stray Bombay Studios'. That was a mistake. It's just Stray Bombay! -Also, during our conversation about VR, I bring up my brother Connor, who agrees with me, but it may have come off as though he disagreed with me.
