hyyy sweetie as I have seen many RU-vidrs uploading videos with that same topic I.e,( my apartment in south Korea as English teacher) and their apartment is like very small and very cozy and like super messy but when I see yours its like heaven leaving that cardboard mess 😅 and I just wanna ask that from which website you applied for this job and in which school do you teach and exactly where your apartment is (I really love this job and wanna apply for this)
Unfortunately I didn’t believe the horror stories either. I took them with a grain of salt. Then got screwed on my contract, humiliated, and nearly attacked by my boss. I also outlasted a Korean teacher who started at the same time as me. She was treated worse than I was. My question to you is why do Hagwons have so many more horror stories than Epik if it’s really just the teachers’ fault?
Living as a single person, how much food waste do you actually produce? And why would you "obviously" not drink tap water, in a civilised country like South Korea?
I don’t have a degree just college qualification but planning on taking the TEFL Level 5 course, would i still be able to have opportunities to teach in Korea with a TEFL level 5 certificate?
Amelia, thank you very much for this video! I took careful notes of what you said. I spent 10 years teaching in China and loved it. I want to go to to Busan now.
@@ameliaabroad9278 China was great till about 2019. My advice is wait till the current dictator is gone before packing your bags. It is a highly unstable situation at the moment.
Hi, Im Planning on teaching in Korean within the next couple years. My question is, does it matter if the bachelors degree id from a community college or must it be from a university?
I'd recommend - whizz.quv.kr/ when looking for jobs, I had a really positive experience with them. I believe it is only native speakers for the e2 visa but it's worth researching more !
@@ameliaabroad9278I’m teaching in China but I wanna relocate to South Korea! However As a non native speaker! Wondering whether it’s easier for me! I’ve 4years experience and I’m still teaching in China as of now! I’mma try it though!
Very informative video, I have a question, which curriculum is used in Korea…is it the American or British curriculum? I’m looking for a place that teaches either or so I can get 1 year experience because I want to apply in UAE
Thank you so much for watching! In hagwons, they follow their own curriculum but they often teach American English. I'm not sure about schools for older children as i've only worked in Kindergartens!
Hi! I am planning to move to Korea next year to teach English and I am hoping to apply to teach at a hagwon rather than the EPIK program. Could you give me some tips on where and which one to apply?
I'd recommend looking at Daves ESL cafe, whizz.quv.kr/, Korea Bridge and "english teachers in South Korea" facebook groups to look for jobs. There are so many hagwons!
Hi, Great video. Question: Are all Hagwons/EPIK programs directed at teaching children only? Are there some situations where you can choose to teach like teenagers or maybe even adults?
Yes there are ones for lots of different ages! I did children (kindergarten/ elementary) so they were from 4-13. There are also elementary / middle schools which I think goes from 7-16 roughly. There are also adult teaching jobs but I don't know too much about them!
If you sign through EPIK, are you assigned where to teach, or do you have any input with what city or even school you teach? In addition to that, are you assigned housing or do you have any input? If not, do you know of any programs which would allow you to specify to teach in Incheon, for example?
Hello! With EPIK you are allowed to express a preference on location/city but they cannot guarantee this. You are also usually assigned housing by the school they put you with. Hagwons are the only way to choose exactly where you teach unfortunately :)
Did you have your passport before applying. I currently don't have one but am planning on applying for it tomorrow. Will recruiters still consider you if you don't have it in hand yet?
@@ameliaabroad9278 wel since asking the question I applied for a job before having a passport and was able to get everything rolling and I actually will be in south korea in about 2 weeks from now :) thank you for replying though 🙏
Hello I'm an Indian postgraduate in English Language and Literature can I able to get job in South Korea as English Teacher? What should I do for that? I mean should I need to get ESL certificate or something like that? Could you please reply me? 😊
Hello! At the moment the e2 teaching visa only takes teachers from specific native english speaking countries unfortunately :( I don't know much about other routes in
I’m currently in college for education so I can teach in Korea. I really want to work in Jeju! I truly hope I can with my degree and background in working with children. Thank you sooo much for this video! I’ll be coming back to it frequently to make sure I have everything ready when I graduate, loll 🙂🙂
Hey Amelia. Thanks for the informative videos u post , lovely. My question is can a certified experienced non-native teacher get a job there? I mean with bachelor degree in eng +tefl+Tesol ?
Hey! Thank you so much for watching 💗I’m not too clued up on this area but I know to get an ‘e2’ visa for teaching English here you have to be from a select few English speaking countries unfortunately! If you’re a a citizen in these countries, I think you can qualify for the visa. You’re more than qualified but South Korea seem to make it difficult for non-native teachers , probably worth a Google because I’m not 100% sure!
Thank you so much for making this video! I’ve wanted to do this since I was in middle school over a decade ago, but only recently did I start getting into the specifics of how that’d be possible. I have a couple years left before I get my bachelors so maybe I’ll do that and get a TEFL as well during that time and hope things don’t change too much over the course of the next two years! What was the application process like for you by the way? Thanks for reading. I hope you have a lovely day!
Thank you so much for watching! That’s a great idea, I did my TEFL in my final year of University so there’s no rush! The process was actually really quick and easy in terms of getting the job itself, it’s more that you have to take a lot of time when you’re picking which school is right for you (if you’re going down the Hagwon route). The visa stuff was a little bit more confusing and time consuming, but it’s very manageable and there’s lots of info online depending on which country you’re coming from! Wishing you all the best 💗
Hey! To get a job you just need to go through a recruiter, I went through ‘whizz’ (they have a website) or you can look directly at schools and recruiters on Daves ESL cafe, Korea Bridge or teaching in South Korea Facebook groups. Unfortunately the teaching visa is limited to certain countries (the E2 visa), but if you’re able to get the visa, going through recruiters or applying directly to schools is the first step! ☺️
:3 Hey there Amelia thank you so much for this video, I am currently in this exact same boat as you. I was wondering for your Hagwon search did you use a recruiter? Would you possibly be willing to do a video or share some tips on how you searched for your Hagwons? I currently have a recruiter and I am very stuck! I am very similar to you and would like to be in a specific area of Seoul. I originally have decided to apply for Epik becauce of the "hagwon horror stories" but the more i hear the more i feel similar to you where i feel those people maybe werent ready to teach in Korea dn thats why. You seem to reccommed Hagwons pretty highly. I am aloso weary of Public schools because ive hear cthe stories of "Oh i have 4 diffeent schools I work at and have to travel to and i live in the middle of no where." EPIK i hear is also changing their holidays and will possibly go to the same as Hagwons.. So now after your video I think my opinion has changed ahahha.
Thank you for this! I'm looking into teaching there in the next year or so. I just wondered if you went through epik or not? And if uou got to pick the year group you were teaching?
@@ameliaabroad9278 yeah i’m from the UK and i feel like there’s no info out there for us 😭😭 i keep seeing things like FBI check etc and i know we don’t have that so i was just thinking maybe it’s the DBS
Yes definitely! I can definitely make a video about the requirements soon, but there aren’t many, you can have any degree it doesn’t matter! If you’ve got a degree and a clean criminal record, that’s pretty much all you need ☺️☺️ and I’m so glad you like the videos! thank you so much for watching 💗
I am really enjoying it so far thank you! I am excited to be moving to a more central area next month, but it’s been a really great experience. I’ve found it to be a lot more comfortable to live here than I expected ☺️
I feel the same, all the videos are from American or South African perspective I was starting to feel nervous about moving! How was the travelling? Was it difficult due to Covid restrictions?
@@its_salmasskin the travelling was ok! Once all of your documents and everything is ready and you have your PCR it isn’t too bad. When you arrive at the airport you’re guided through (it can take up to 2 hours) but it’s quite straight forward and they’ll download koreas quarantine app on your phone. Then if you’re here as a teacher, you can do your quarantine in the apartment provided by your school, which had just been reduced to 7 days! It makes things a bit tricky but when you’re going to be here for a long time, it’s worth it!
I’m glad you found it informative! So basically my contract was only 4.5 months because someone left their contract early and they needed someone to take over. My school only runs contracts until the end of February (end of the school year here) so I had the option to renew for 12 months from March but decided not to! But yeah I am finishing my contract, i just got lucky with a short one so I got to test the waters before a long commitment! ☺️
This was for sure one of the main things for me! I was so worried about where I would end up. Now that I’m settled here I’d be more open to it, but before coming I definitely wouldn’t take that risk 😅
