Rewild Minnesota (formerly North Winds Wilderness School)is a guerrilla non profit (meaning we don’t make any money, it we don’t have the paperwork) our aim is to spread nature connection far and wide, while embracing the evolutionary realities of our species and our planet. For millions of years of ancestors roamed free. In perfect balance with the cycles of the natural world, now in the last 10,000 years or so, we have destroyed our planet and forgotten who we really are!

now I know how to throw, I would like to do handline in sea port area next. Can we do popping, jigging, etc with the handline? what kind of lure we use?

It's much easier to start from a brand new pacific yurt, factory direct. Of course taking apart and reassembling even a thing from Amazon, made in China, that needs returned is a challenge. This had soul.

Thanks for the breakdown. Most other videos are super long, and for someone who just needed to brush up, this was perfect. Also I have a question. How does this process change when tanning a hair-on hide? Do you just skip the lime/water soak and hair/epidermis scrape? I've heard you need to do multiple brain soaks when working with hair-on. Is that true?
@christophershipman2843
@christophershipman2843 4 месяца назад
Salt the hide with non iodized salt and stretched out to dry it. I do it after fleshing to get out the oils and lock in the hair.After it dries soak it to remove the salt. Do this a couple of times and it should somewhat rehydrate the hide as well. 12:02 When you brain it you work the brain slurry into the flesh side really well and let it partially dry and soak into the hide.i do it a second time as well to be sure to get it all worked in. Then I give it a day or two to sit still stretched out before rinsing it an wringing it out. Finish breaking it in by pulling in all directions and then smoke it away from the heat so you don't cook it. Smoke only the flesh side and don't use pine or some other resinous wood for the smoke.

I live in a coastal town in England and fish off of my aging sit on top kayak using a handline. Many years ago I'd go with my neighbour's kids down to the beach and either take them out or let them have a go on their own - the yak is a tandem Ocean Kayak Malibu. The littlest, Sally aged 6, had seen people fishing with rods from the nearby stone jetty and wanted to have a go so, during the mackerel season, we took out the yak and a couple of yo-yos rigged with feathers - we usually use a set up of six feathered hooks in a line for mackerel over here. We went out on an in coming tide that will bring fish into the bay to feed. Sally dropped her line over the side and jigged it up and down while I kept the yak on station. Suddenly she called out "The water's trying to pull me in!" On retrieving the line we found five decent sized mackerel on the first cast. We caught a dozen in all and headed back towards the jetty where Sally proudly showed off her catch to the rod anglers who'd hardly got a bite: "We got fishes!" Sally is all grown up now and got married last summer. As well as her "proper" wedding present I made up a yo-yo with mackerel feathers and decorated with a ribbon bow. After the honeymoon she sent me a thank you card which said: BEST WEDDING PRESENT EVER!

You can skip the Lime or Lye solution, and let it soak in water until the hair slips off. This way you don't have to put it in a relaxing solution, just put it straight into the picking solution. It will stink more this way, but you use less chemicals. It will quit stinking the minute it's soaking in the pickling solution. You like brain tanning, but there is a reason there are so many ways to tan a hide. You can use brain tanned hides for clothing. The same piece of hide can be vegetable tanned for a stiff shoe leather. Then you can make it stiffer by finishing with a thicker animal oil tallow, or more flexible with a thinner oil like Neatsfoot oil. Personally I started tanning with a salt/alum fur on tan. I'm doing a vegitable, alum & salt tan to give it a nice reddish brown color. The hair-off tan is almost done and it would make a nice heavier leather for a warm coat than brain tanning will. With all that is going on these days, hunting, trapping and tanning may become a way of life again for food & cloths. It's good that you're teach folks the old ways, we should never lose those skills.

I use the yoyo for a ton of stuff all year long in minnesota. I've caught big flathead on the st croix, sturgeon on rainy river, and I prefer them all winter for ice fishing. With a 6" hole I can set it like a tip up, and watch it turning when I have a take. For ice fishing lake trout I use a yoyo spooled with 30lb suffix 832 on lakesuperior or in the boundary waters. I keep a small shot of paranoid with mine for et line fishing on the st croix. Run the paranoid through the middle then clip the carabiner to the ends of the paranormal forming a loop. Hang from a branch. Your reel moves a couple feet when you get a take, and can freeline itself until you get there to set the hook.

I'm in the PNW on the Olympic peninsula. Harvest tons of chicken among numerous other types of fungi. Definitely a good way to store them. They freeze well also but who wants to waste valuable freezer space as they rehydrate well also. Good video for those that are new. In the PNW you will find them growing on conifer stumps and snags (told this is the only area it is safe to harvest from conifers) and not only hardwood like oak

Generally speaking walking barefoot in nature has its own benefits and walking barefoot in snow and cold lands or exposing the body to cold like cold shower or ice plunge or wild swimming has an enormous health mental benefits. Search dr Susanna Søberg from Denmark, she is talking about this topic a lot.

I am working on toughening my feet so I can walk and hike wherever I want. I don’t want to loose my toughening progress over the winter, so I am continuing to walk and hike in colder temperatures. I am comfortable down to the upper thirties. Snow is still a burning challenge. Hope to build my cold tolerance as well.

Watched your video before i bought a handreel a while back, great video. I have a cheap $7 6" Yo-Yo handlreel & a hefty $50 3-1/2" Yoyito handreel. The Yoyito is my favorite & its all i ever use.. unless i go Salmon & Steelhead fishing in the Salmon River in NY then ill use a rod & reel. Though I intend to attempt catching Steelhead & Salmon on the Yo-Yo with a fly setup this year! Fly Line casts better on my speciffic Yo-Yo & its easier on the hands with the bigger fish. With the small Yoyito ive caught Rainbow Trout & Crappies from land, Small Mouth Bass & a few decent sized Large Mouth Bass from both land & kayak, & the largest so far was a 19" Pickerel from land. I use braid on the Yoyito & depending on the fish im trying to catch, I'll attatch a swivel & a couple feet of fluoro or mono. I usually reel in exactly how you do in the video, but come to find it easier when i do hook into a fish, to drop the reel & use 2 hands pulling in the fish. It sometimes causes some tangling in my line but have more control of the fish. However you do it you gotta love the simplicity of handlining!!

How would you get the brain solution not using a blender?
@christophershipman2843
@christophershipman2843 4 месяца назад
Cast iron pan really low heat and smashing the brain up till it is broken down in a thin slurry. You can use just egg yolks instead of the brain mixed with a bit of water and worked into the hide really well. You can even use mayonnaise and bacon grease if you want. Lux soap shavings broken down in a little warm water also works.

That is funny, you said usually Coyotes go point A- point B and you were not sure what it was doing, I said "It was probably after that Vole" and you said the same thing right after I said that. I live in the wilds of Pennsylvania, so I have seen this wildlife before, I have tracks up here by my house and I came here to figure out if I got a Coyote hanging around my house or the neighbor down the roads 2 chocolate labs, that don't usually wander up here.

@Rewildminnesota
@Rewildminnesota Год назад
Deer hides don’t retain their hair very well. It is hair, not fur so it slips really easily. You can either just rub the brains in on the inside of the hide, then soften and smoke it that way, or you can bark tan it. Either way, most of the hair will eventually fall out
