Same thing will happen to a jiu jitsu player if they go to a wrestling gym. Ask me how I know lol. Truth is, you need both if you want to successfully grapple a person, the future therefore is a combination of both. In an alley with raised sides if you ask me.
That is true. MMA has evolved so that everyone has to have a certain standard for all elements. Most have a speciality but without all-rounded skills you end up finishedby a specialist, as ju jitsu was for a while in the UFC.
Takes a humble person to get killed in the gym and keep going back for more. Some high level wrestlers get wrecked their first bjj lesson and never return
I agree.. but jiu jitsu is a byproduct of judo and has always incorporated elements of judo to get an opponent to the ground. Modern jiu jitsu has been using wrestling for a long while now.. its definitely not all butt scooting sport jiujitsu were a competitor looks for an advantage in the rule set to get a win. My gym trains a takedown EVERY day we come into class. It is important like you are implying.
It’s not useless- you just heard the guy say he was taking people down and still getting submitted w/o any clue as to how I agree bjj people should be able to take someone down from standing tho. Once that guy had even a little bit of guard passing or knowledge they prob couldn’t submit him Edit: I strongly prefer to go for takedowns or pass guard, but if I can’t do anything when I’m in guard my game is incomplete just like someone who can only play guard has an incomplete game
Agreed. But I can submit 80% of the pure wrestlers if they try to take me down and I can take anybody down who doesn’t grapple so BJJ is pretty useful.
First of all, wrestling is becoming a bigger part of BJJ again and the gradual shift in rules we are experiencing show that. Also, if your gym doesn't do much standup, change gym or go wrestle/Judo on the side. But regarding your original point. The point of BJJ is that you are able to fight from the ground and usually, even at a bad gym, you know enough to prevent yourself from getting too violentlu thrown. This means that after being taken down, your odds of winning actually increase. At least in a 1v1.
A true Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy takes 2 years of takedown lessons... taking people down is a primary lesson in Brazilian jiu-jitsu..... poor Brazilian jiu-jitsu academies do not demonstrate good takedown
I’m not even half way through this video and already I’m all in as a lifelong customer. I’m all about supporting an American made company that believes in hard work and grind mentality. Keep up the great work gentlemen, I look forward to ordering products from you in the near future. 🇺🇸🫡🤙🏼🙏🏼
I’m usually right in lockstep with what Joey is saying, but I gotta say I’m with Drew in this one. That word “try” really didn’t sit well with me. To me I feel like when people say they “will try” or “I tried” it’s usually a cop out. I see what Joey’s saying, but I propose we use the word “start” there in its place. I have “tried” things many times over and then when I commit I “start” I feel like it’s a better word for what Joey is actually saying. It is starting and taking that first step in something you’re committed to following through on and persevering through.
I try to not be judgemental, but I can't help but feel it's completely arrogant when people say something happening in their lives was "divine intervention" when there's so much war, famine, violence etc in the world. Just a very ignorant thing to say that god specifically chose you to make it to the UFC. He must be an MMA fan
Very true. I’ve been consistent with going to the gym M-F at 5am, walks every evening, pledging growth to the grave, along with an unprocessed diet. These modern diseases ain’t claiming me 💪🏼
This clip needs more context. If tricking the viewer to watch it multiple times to figure out wtf is being explained then bravo, you got me. I believe this is about Jiu-Jitsu? I thought he may of been a rock-climber or another extreme sport participant. I really had to poke around to come to the conclusion yall are an apparel company that sprinkles in some podcasting. Nothing wrong with that. I think what yall are doing is great. free criticism lol
Good episode. I appreciate your linking struggle, overcoming difficulty, specifically jiu-jitsu to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Very applicable and true.
