It goes through a master compressor from Boss RC-202, to squeeze out some more volume. It`s a very basic compressor though and i`m not sure whether it brings any positive value to the sound. No other external stuff or processing.
Hypnotic jam! In the short time that I’ve had the Alpha Base, I discovered that some of its magic comes from the use of its LFOs. Such an awesome drum machine!
@@larryk6853 it's got 11 voices. Yes, everything that you hear in this video comes from the alpha base. Some of them are modified samples, some are synthesized. All bass is synthesized with the kick module.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I've been using Jomox Airbase 99 (and x-Bass09 before that) for many years as one of my main sources but from listening to your videos I see how much more versatile Alphabase is I've been hoping Jurgen would release a rack mount version but as I don't think that will happen, I feel I must have an Alphabase. Now just eagerly waiting for the MK2. Best wishes
Awesome as ever. I’m having some issues with my AB at the moment. Few questions if you don’t mind. I find samples, though grouped, are still in a bit of a random order. Have you reordered yours? You always seem to find what you need very quickly. For reverb and delay, I know you can adjust level for each track, but things like room size are only controllably universally I believe? Despite the AB being awesome for kicks, I struggle to get mine to cut through, particularly when other things are coming through my mixer. Do I need compression etc? For me, the standard clap samples sound pretty bad, yours sound good. Are you using your own samples? Finally, I have a constant clicking on track three that clicks in time with the sample triggering. It’s very noticeable and extremely annoying. Do you know what this could be? Is my unit faulty? Sorry for all the Qs, your help would be greatly appreciated. (Also, still humbly requesting a video on multi kits)
Awesome as ever. I’m having some issues with my AB at the moment. Few questions if you don’t mind. The sample on track 7 (crash), that’s your own I assume? I see you use LFO on your kick, what role is that playing? For reverb and delay, I know you can adjust level for each track, but things like room size are only controllably universally I believe? @@christopherwhitehall2565 1. Yes 2. No rearranging of the samples, just got used to where to look for what after 1+ year of playing. Also, sometimes I pick a random sample and just go with it. 3. LFO modulates the pitch, creating this wobbly bass line in the kick's tail. 4. That's correct. 5. The master compressor that I use has nothing to do with kick's cutting through, it's just to make the mix louder in the live scenario. To make the kick cut through you need to carefully arrange all other instruments, adjusting them with filters etc. It's basically all about getting a good mix 😅 6. I'm using the default clap sound, but it's modified with filter, envelopes etc. 7. That's what an analog amp envelope does. If the click is noticeably louder on one channel, you could contact jomox support, but some click is to be expected. 8. I remember about the multi mode question.
Lovely video, amazing sounds! I've been performing with the Alpha for a year and a half (coming from 999 and 888, plus MFB machines). It is deep, but a bit quirky, though much better than the 999. I don't ever recommend it to friends... because, to be honest an analog Rytm or a Syntakt is much more capable and quicker to learn. But Alpha is unique, and I for one and sticking with it. Jurgen is a genius, and geniuses can be a little clueless/chaotic sometimes. This is not a complaint, really.
Regarding LXR - two years ago I was doing live performance in local place, for 15-ish people. Something broke in the setup 7 minutes in, so I improvised it on LXR-02 only for 45 minutes :D Got a lot of sounds/patterns prepared beforehand, because I was playing with it so much and it turned out great - no regrets. I fail to remember why have I sold it, for me it's perfect performance machine, especially the morphing feature - made said show for me. But I can agree the palette can be very acid/brutal techno/noise oriented.
Excellent video! Is the side-chain compression coming from the Alpha Base or externally? Your jams are very inspiring! An Alpha Base will arrive in a few days to my doorstep and it will be a welcome addition to my studio. It'll be sheer madness pairing it up with my TR-8s!
The way you use the mbrane as a resonant ambient voice is killer! Any tips to learn that voice better? It’s always the one I’ve had the most issues getting to terms with
1. Turn off noise. 2. Cup1=0, Cup2=64. This is the default settings with no modulation. That's because cup1 parameter can only go up, while Cup2 is binary, can go negative or positive and 64 is a zero. 3. Turn off pitch modulation from page b (envelope parameters). 4. High damp value. 5. Now experiment with pitches, and moderately apply modulation, LFOs etc. This should show you what this voice is all about. Additionally for ambient stuff, I connect a jack to MB output (it's an 'empty' jack that goes nowhere). Now you can't hear the MB in the main mix but you can hear its reverb and delay.
Empty jack trick is brilliant, man! Everything sounds so good! Your workflow is a great example of squeezing all AB‘s possibilities. I have one question from my side: Do you usually put some reverb on the kick?
Thx. It's alpha base through a compressor and mixer. I explain it later in the video. Yes there are some samples, if you're interested about a particular one please point me to the timing
Oh man, I’m jammin to this on the tv and I thought I’d check the comments & as I opened the video on my phone the tv and the phone combined created this double kick type thing going on and it was so cool. I recorded it on my iPad. It’s really nothing too fancy, but it sounds cool being all ping ponged the way it was. Love the video/track! I need a DFAM 🤔
That´s impressive... where does that distortion come from? (not the one on the input), is it recorded on the samples? I'm interested in getting one myself but i was a bit concerned it was "too clean" for my taste, but you make it sound so crunchy...
@@hokami77 there is no 'distortion' setting on the alpha base, but there are some elements that easily distort, mainly the reverb and the FM synth. Other than that, all instruments (samples included) distort slightly on higher volume setting (when accent is applied). In this jam I use onboard samples and synthesized sounds, but there is also a distorted guitar sample coming in after some 1 or 2 minutes. Also, the sound goes into boss rc202 , where some master compression is applied. If you want to compare with a 'pure' alpha base sound that still has distortion, check out my 'abusing my jomox alpha base' video. I didn't use any external samples there, just added some master limiters post-prod, and it's unaltered apart from that.
@@MaharadzaStunt oooh I see! Thank you so much for the info! I heard the accent trick before, but not thought about the reverb, which will distort through the sends i assume? And how does the FM distortion work? Sorry if im asking too much... Thanks again, I really like the way you make this thing sound and your ideas, cheers!!
Sadly I can't tell you exactly how it works because I don't know the technicalities of AB's circuitry etc. In both cases - reverb and FM - I suppose it comes from some sort of feedback building up.
