It's now an idea of mine to do an adult animated series called "The Wildwood Chronicles" that's a grand-scale crossover between several media that retroactively puts them in the same universe and the HBO Spawn Trilogy will be a part of it and like with all the others serves as a sequel to it picking up years later after Spawn had to kill Jade and declared to Cogliostro "I want my humanity back!".
What I real liked about show it that it art style follows the type used for kid cartoons at the time, like what we see in such Shows' like Gargoyles (Keith David voiced Goliath!)or X-Men, yet such a animation style dose not look out of place with this show. Animation was more mature back then despite being gear towards children, in style and storytelling.
Atop everything, props all around to the depiction of Heaven’s assassins. You can tell they’re from a higher place that’s supposed to be better, but you can also see and feel that they are heartless, empty, unfeeling creatures, a shadow of what they’re supposed to be. If you can’t hear it in their voices, you can in what they say. They insult Spawn in how they remorselessly tell him he’ll never find peace and yet they won’t kill him even when he asks it because he’s ‘not in their contract’, yet they had no real problem with seeking the life of one of their own because she chose not to kill Al. Her romance with him is clearly not another factor, only the initial offense that put a target on her head in the first place.
The biggest issue I had with Spawn was it's portrayal of Heaven and God. HEAR ME OUT. I am NOT saying Todd McFarlane should have made this a religious piece to promote my religion. And I do NOT claim to be the kind of Christian that NEVER watches or enjoys darker stuff. Far from it. But part of the CHARM of this is how God was distant, unknown and hard to fully understand. Often, this is how most who believe in God (or any deity) feel. This darker look was interesting. The Redeemer type warrior (The Anti-Spawn) uses Celestial Fire that burns and hurts to use. I would rather have seen Spawn given the purpose of a Redeemer, to fight against hellspawn on Earth as part of his redemption. In order to cleanse his soul of evil and pay for his sins, he had to spend time as a Redeemer, learning self-control and morality. They never went that way. They went an awkward, bizarre way where Spawn just .... I don't know. He became SOMETHING. God turned out to be a mullet-sporting Mr. Olympian try-out with ego problems. Malbolgia was...I don't know, they went all over the place. Then some Mother figure that made no sense was disappointed in both. I just....It was just so screwy. Spawn was just....there. And they made a "God" that didn't seem like anything associated to God. A Devil that was....quirky. And then we had Spawn. Before they went the downhill area with Heaven's side, Spawn was good. You really couldn't tell if he would end up being a good guy again or if he would give in to evil totally. He had inclinations to both. But this route...just made no sense. I feel this is where they FAILED. Angry anti-religious emo's will definitely suck it up and love it, but that's kind of why Spawn went OUT OF BUSINESS. They'll try to blame it on something else, but in truth the moment it became some fairy-tale version of God and Satan that had no strong focus besides "WE LOVE SPAWN!!! SPAWN ALWAYS WINS!!!", it went downhill. Myself, I felt that God should have been kept distant, unknown and up to the reader to decide. And Al Simmons eventually given the role of a Redeemer to purify himself and better himself for God. But that's just me.
That thought came to my mind when i watched the TMNT 2003 series! The character models look identical... It has to be some kind of easter egg for sure.
Don’t you feel it? It’s all changing. The sides aren’t as clear cut anymore. I can’t kill forever. I’m tired, I want some peace! Please, help me to end it.
The soul of Al Simmons, good and evil at constant battle with each other, he was already cursed even before he became Hellspawn. But maybe it was Malbolgia's biggest mistake to never have looked beyond the darkness of Spawn's soul.
Jade was really good character I loved her & hoped she'd be resurrected or something later on. 10 years of this & still better than anime from today. She & Spawn I ship em. Guy deserves to be happy & at peace too. Seriously when she kissed him without hesitation even after seeing him Beauty & the Beast but more dark & gruesome version.
0:33 to 0:35 That's a bad@$$ moment, right there. I never noticed that their eyes are never seen. Even when one of them takes their robe off, you don't see them. The more you know.
