At some point I'll have to make it across the pond and surf the Bitches. My Apex was excellent for the surf in Baja but that big glassy smooth wave is something else.
Warching this video over 20 years since I last surfed these waves. Probably not something I'll be able to do again, but a memory I'll treasure forever. Glad that new generations are continuing to love and enjoy this magical place.
They are special kayaks specific to riding ocean waves. I am a board surfer from the 80s and switched to Surf kayaking about ten years ago. Have not regretted it for a moment. I had about ten years of white water kayaking experience and a great roll. Without a flawless roll I would say surf kayaking would be terrifying. I did have one swim in and trying to swim in a kayak is hard work as it is full of water making it weigh a couple hundred pounds. Waves 4-5 feet tall and breaking from one side to another is great fun. Bigger can be exciting but also frightening. Unlike a surfer, that can ditch a board, surf kayakers are stuck in the boat for the duration of an encounter with a wave. And the beatings can be fierce. Also, surf kayaking near large groups of board surfers is not advised. Near Santa Cruz California we are lucky to have some spots that are idea for surf kayaking when the conditions are right. Other places that may not be the case. I you are a little brave and put in the time to learn and master the roll and paddle braces you will have a blast.
@@ttank7241 ive recently switched from SUP surfer to waveski, i love it but im struggling with the roll and when its choppy conditions its a struggle. Watchin the guys on the ocean surf kayaks makes me think about getting into it
Bit of an old git here-75-I used to ride a P&H surf ski back in 1974-to about 84, then I got into windsurfing. In 1974 I lived right above the beach at Hayle in Cornwall-if you aren’t familiar with Hayle it is in the inside of St Ives bay and has a great bar to surf off.
