What's going on EDC People, and what's our Journey today?!
This channel started about a year ago. It began with some much needed urging from friends! - Essentially video documenting the journey in the EDC community, EDC gear/knives & the EDC lifestyle!
I want you to join me on the Journeys together. Be it shopping new knives, unboxing new arrivals, reviewing EDC gear and especially knives (traditional, modern, and the between!)...as well as EDC community topic discussions commonly debated...I.E. Steel types and preferences, knife locking mechanisms, countries of origin, quality & all the hot topics the EDC Community discuss/debate.
A different perspective. Other channels are mostly veteran collectors. All great people and channels - but this is from the perspective of a self admitted knife-aholic, and neophyte in the RU-vid realm & EDC lifestyle in general.
Veterans in the community may find it interesting also, comical perhaps!
some newer Manix 2 lightweights use hex screws to hold them together instead of being pinned and supposedly there is a company making lightweight aftermarket scales for the screwed together lightweights *edited* I should say developing scales to eventually sell on the aftermarket for lightweights
Spy27 is very very close to s35. In toughness edge retention and corrosion resistance. Tbh. Idk what makes them different beyond chemical Composition. However they come out about the same in the end.
I love my para 3 lw, so much so that I’ll probably end up buying one of the sprint runs in a higher end steel like Rex 45 or spy 27. I find the action very good as well. The lockup is strong and there is not lock stick. My lightweight also is not centered. I’m thinking it’s just inherent to the design. It doesn’t bother me. I’ve owned g10 and frn knives and like both equally. They have their own pros and cons. I will say this when it comes to spyderco frn knives: they are not all created equal. Their Japanese line such as endura and delica have much grippier frn. The texturing is deeper and more aggressive. The plastic used also has more of a bit to it. I prefer the Japanese line of frn over the para 3 lightweight frn. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t adequate, it totally is. It’s held up really well I would say better than my g10 knives. Spydercos execution of the para 3 lw is perfect in my book. That includes the scales. I think this is proved by the fact that you don’t see aftermarket scales for the para 3 lw like you do with the benchmade bugout. The reason the bugout has aftermarket scales is because that frn actually sucks. It’s flexy and actually does feel cheap. The para 3 lw doesn’t bend like the benchmade bugout. I would happily buy another para3 lw and as it stands now I have no interest in buying the standard para 3. I shouldn’t have to immediately go out and have to buy an after market clip for an already expensive knife to fix such a trivial mistake. I would only consider the standard model of the fix the issue by moving the laniard hole so the knife can carry deeper. I would be even more inclined to buy one if they dropped their standard clip entirely and moved to the wire pocket clip like the lightweight.
Good review. These lights are not in the same class even though they output a similar amount of light on turbo. One important thing that is not generally mentioned in reviews is semiconductor degradation with increasing temperature. When a manufacturer claims a 50,000 hour life expectancy for their LED emitter they mean that long at room temperature. For every 7 degrees Celsius the temperature rises the remaining life expectancy of the LED is about cut in half. Temperature matters. The larger light has a lot more metal and runs at at a head temperature of less than 40 degrees C on turbo. It also uses a larger 18.0 watt-hour power cell. The smaller light runs at a head temperature of about 46 degrees C on turbo so the emitter would be expected to last about half as long as the one in the larger light. The LD30 comes with a 12.6 watt-hour power cell. The larger light is a better choice for applications that require more than 1000 lumens continuously. For applications that need 800 lumens or less the smaller light is easier to carry but would also need to be charged more often. By the way, it seems Fenix has given the wrong impression that the LD30 battery level indicator only works with their battery. The indicator in my LD30 seems to work fine with any standard 3.6 or 3.7 Volt protected button-top cell and not just the Fenix branded ones. Perhaps they mean it won't work with two CR123A cells in place of one 18650. Good luck with your videos.
My dad must have opened a million cardboard oil cans back in the day with the sheep’s foot blade on his Case. He made the perfect pouring spout every time.
I'm probably the only one who thinks this but I reckon the shiny steel liners under the g10 look cheap as hell, looks like a cheap knife trying to imitate the look of an expensive knife but now that so many cheap knives do this, the expensive knives being a minority now look cheap (to me).
Awesome review! I have the older Counter Point 1 in AUS 8 steel for about 7 or 8 years and carried it for on and off duty. Just bought a second Counter Point with the newer AUS 10 steel. They are great knives. Thanks for sharing brother!
My para 3 has serious rough action out of the box. It’s hard to flick open at all. Is this normal? It’s annoying not getting the satisfying flick open. It stops after traveling 80% of the way to locked straight.
Hey! Glad you reached out. It is often this way out of the box. Without seeing it I can’t be totally sure it’s not a malfunction but I’d bet it’s just new and needs wearing in. You can loosen the pivot screw just a hair if you’d like to expedite the process, but truthfully the best way I’ve found with Spyderco is to just grin and bare it for about two days and it’ll loosen up on its own. If you adjust the pivot try to make sure you use a torx bit and do it just slightly if you want to do it really well you could remove the pivot screw, put some BLUE loctite on the threads, and re-screw to the perfect action you like. The loctite will keep the pivot from loosening on its own over time. It will do that without loctite.
How many times are you going to tell us you prefer the para 3 with G10? That’s admitting a bias right up front. I’m sorry, but a difference of $40+ is the price of a nice Civivi Praxis. If YOU prefer G10 over FRN, fine..! OCD much .. ? Constantly Aligning & realigning the two knives and constantly touching your sticker drove me nuts.
@@edcjourneys You did well man, don't take this guy to heart. Thanks for the honest review. I wish I could put hands on both before buying, but it seems to be difficult to find a store with one, let alone two Para 3s! Your video helped me.
@@edcjourneys Aah I see. Nah, I don't have one yet, but I am thinking about getting one. And thanks for the reply! =) So there is a stopper you say? :)
1oz for a 5x stronger setup for the knife. 1oz doesn't seem worth it. Also I really dont believe there are ANY aftermarket scale for the LW. Its a completely different internal setup then the g10 version
After much research and back and forth decisions, I finally decided on both of these (purchased just a few days ago and arriving tomorrow). They both seem to be well loved, so I'm looking forward to getting them and having decent flashlights to always have with me. This video is a reassurance that I made the right choice(s).
You'll love these lights. I use the LD30 or PD36TAC, TK16V2 or TK11TAC on walks on our mountain and my wife likes the PD36R. I take all of those since it's not far from home. They're all awesome. Thanks for the upload. Your review was fine.
My favorite knife. I have the shredded carbon fiber/raindrop damascus and the dark green micarta/stone washed black. The lock open/ lock closed button lock is my favorite aspect. Everything else about it is brilliant. I live in Oregon and any knife is legal here…so it’s a winner for me. Thanks for the nice vid here.
I just ordered one of these yesterday, I have been researching it to make sure it was a good purchase. That's why I watched this video, you really helped me out with the info, thank you!
