In this scene, specifically, they intended to portray how children behave. And the children grow up displaying all the bad behaviour learnt from their families and their friends and their idols and their regulations from organizations in society. The children stealing his sign, smashing it on his face and kicking him on the ground, exemplifies clearly that bad behaviour is tolerated (at least when most people are not looking at) in society and encouraged if people are in group. It is always blaming the victim (and most victims of injustice are men!). Yet, people, whether individually or collectively, often try to minimize or censor this fact. If a man's value is solely based on his working and fighting force, the he can't have a happy life. And weak men, vulgar women and children still blaming other men for all the troubles in society.
