When I was in junior high my summer was spent wading creeks around my house. Meaning riding my bike for miles to start. Fish all day wading north and the walking miles back to my bike (mostly in the dark)so I could ride home. Wayne County Indiana. One stretch was from Williamsburg baseball diamond all the way to Wayne County Randolph County line road. When I would get to County rd it would be prime time in the evening. The only spot that I would catch these largemouth bass (I thought when I was a kid). Only in one hole. They were never over13” but they were thick and looked like spots from today as far as the pattern. The thing that always struck me was their eyes. They were the orange red color like smallmouth or rock bass (goggle eyes). Beautiful fish. The largemouth pattern was a lot more defined and bright. I wish I would have taken a camera with me one time but never did. I’m guessing largemouth and smallmouth cross or maybe largemouth and rock bass if that’s possible. This was back in late 80’s. In that area I would also catch those little sunfish that look like they came from the ocean because of the colors being so bright.

Heard this once before when I was 19. It was followed by the sound of a heartbeat echoing through the dried creek bed we were sitting in. It still haunts me to this day because I know neither of the people I was with realize what it was even though we all heard it. I made us pack up and leave immediately and told them to walk at half-pace making aggressive noises as I walked backwards down the trail with my knife out. This sound is especially terrifying when it’s just over the hill from you. They still talk about it as a ghost, but I know what it was.

Imagine you're in a confined deep red rock canyon in southern Utah, camping out alone off-season (the august monsoon flash flood season) and it's around midnight and you hear this sound echoing off of the canyon walls. I'll never forget that sound. There was a mountain lion down in that canyon with me. Just me and this big cat.

I was staying at my sister's, whose house was right on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. We were sitting on her bed, talking, next to an open window. It was about 10 o'clock at night. Suddenly, right outside of the window, a mountain lion screamed just like this. The sound was so loud and so terrifying that for a second we just stared at each other, frozen in horror. Then she jumped up and slammed the window shut while I ran to make sure the dogs were in the house. That was one of the most primal and terrifying moments of my life.

I’m thinking scream therapy is what that mountain lion is doing-like, “I’m just going to go out to the woods and scream.” 😂.
