The 26 Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford form the largest university library system in the UK and include the world famous Bodleian Library.
The mission of the Bodleian Libraries is to provide the most effective university library service possible, in response to the research and teaching needs of current and future users; and to maintain and develop access to Oxford's collections as a national and international scholarly resource.
The Bodleian Libraries include the principal University library-the Bodleian Library-which has been a library of legal deposit for 400 years; major research libraries; and libraries attached to faculties, departments and other institutions of the University. The combined library collections number more than 13 million printed items, in addition to over 80,000 e-journals and vast quantities of materials in other formats.
I wish Garry hadn't insisted on searching out supplies when Cibachrome had ended, so extending his exposure to the chemistry. The point is, his art and imagination isn't dependent on any particular material. He could make his art in a thousand ways. Every best wishes to him ♥
Regarding The History Boys, I wonder if the urban middle clas libersl elite would still think it terribly amusing if Hector was heterosexual and gave schoolgirls rides on his motorbike while "feeling them up'. Somehow I don't think so. White middle class liberals are always very picky as to what or whom they choose to be offended by.
What an absolutely lovely chap. I have tattoos of the Knife and the Spyglass and it's great to see, that the man who forged these fantasies, that are such a big part of my imagination, is such a likeable person. Thank you so much for the video, greatly enjoyed it!
Thank you for curating this beauty. These iitems kept in Oxford were not purchased or but stolen using British military force, essentially it is a pirate culture. I would not be comfortable to own a museum with them and would return many of the artifacts back to museums in Iran.
Why couldn't the Opposition Party of the day put forward those arguments against the 'selling off' of 'National Treasures'. The main one of course is the National Health Service. That is a classic example of there being more chiefs than Indians. Where one has the ludicrous situation of an Administrator being in charge of a Medical Professional.
Tch, so I was doing my USPS mail route, had Stand and Deliver come on my iPod, and I wondered if anyone did a cover called "Scan ans Deliver" with that theme. Well, this works too!
what this gentleman did not say is that a lot of these books were collected from villagers by some fabric sellers. they were paid chewing gums instead.
such priceless documents should be really preserved , translated for all, so people know what earlier generations were all about and what culture heritage means to them.
Thank you so much for this interview. I could listen to him for hours. Does anyone know what the book on story motifs he mentioned at the beginning of the video is?
Just re-read His Dark Materials trilogy. It gets better the more one reads it. Thank you for this interview & a chance to hear the greatest living writer speak.
What about Anna Atkins? Her Wikipedia entry says "Very early botanical photographs, 1843 book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1st book illustrated with photographic images)"
@@Krep_B I must disagree. Cyanotypes are a genuine form of photography. The images are formed by light causing a reaction to take place on light sensitivity paper. The developed image is a one-off unique picture just like a Daugaurotype or an ambrotype.
Those manuscripts are in the Arabic alphabet, back thousands of years ago they used their tradition numerals that Cyrus would have been able to reed. Then they had middle Persian, modern Persian and it's alphabet were not used until the rise of Islam in the Persian region. Old school Persian writing is very different, there was 2 of them before Islam, like I said, traditional Persian, Middle Persian and the Arabic numerals they use today. In Turkey after the Ottoman Empire was defeated they went from using Arabic numeral to the Latin one that they use today. I think that in Mongolia they are now converting to using their cultural numerals, they used Russian Cyrillic's in the past, now their going to use tradition Mongol writing, er I think at least!
I love ancient Persia, and it's art, culture, food and music. I have a Persian restaurant in my home town. The food there is delicious, the Persian were sophisticated and civilised back in the day, if only we could get Cyrus II the great back in power, none of this beheading and stoning crap in Iran today. I'm glad the Persian people are waking up and starting to rise up against the regime of Iran today. Persia was a truly great empire, now sadly gone! Greeting from Europe!
Really interesting lecture! I would like to mention, however, some further information on the question asked by the woman with the American accent. The German doctor, Heiko Schöning, was indeed arrested... following an anti-vaccine protest where he was among a number of individuals spreading misinformation about the COVID pandemic in the middle of it. While I do see censorship as a problem; I consider that to be a poor example given the importance of reducing the spread of misinformation at the best of times, and especially mid-crisis.
Lt Col Boden's niece donated his life's savings (£25+K) to Oxford University to open a separate department for Sanskrit learning, with following aims:- * Christian priests to learn Sanskrit to know about Indian scriptures and religious beliefs. * Translate, corrupt and print in order to subvert Hindu philosophies. * Max Müller did exactly that despite failing to become this department's Chair. * Overall, a library of criminality, theft and deceit, typical of the British.
Ancient manuscripts from all over the world, especially from India, kept as "stolen goods". This is the real "loot" the British had made. It's a "Library of Stolen Books".
