These aren't exclusively for school shootings, but that is the primary use case. For an alternative use Example: I went to a high school that was out in the boonies, a couple of years before I went there, there were a bunch of wild boar who got on campus, and they used a lockdown to make sure no one got hurt.
Weird, my school has a whole different drill for that, they call it a ‘lock-in’. Though they’ve only ever used it once and that was for when the police were actively arresting someone right outside 😅
