Jug one of the great interpreters of ballads. I think I wore out my copy of Boss Tenor, when I was younger. Thank goodness for CD reissues.

This is a clinic on how to handle live TV with zero preparation. Eleanor Schano was a total pro. You can tell she was rushed onto the set halfway out of breath. She explains the situation, which prepares the audience in case something goes wrong. Then she proceeds to run the show as smoothly as if she had been in on it all along.

My grandfather and Jug were childhood friends. One of my greatest memory of my grandfather was being his DJ, playing Jug's albums back in the late sixties and early seventies. His favorite was the BLACK CAT.

I had been looking for the origin of the color, bloodshot CBS Eye and I came across this video. When I saw this, I was amazed, because the video quality is amazing. I wish that I could see some more Playhouse 90 like this.

I remember growing up in Harlem from 1981 to 1990. Seeing it go from this to what it's like today is ridiculously impressive. No more crack viles everywhere. No more junkies sitting outside my door. 80's NYC was a battleground for real.

Brings back memories. Knew a whole bunch of street kids back then. In the 1980's. In SF and LA. Most of the street kids in SF did not end up on Polk St. That was a really nasty scene. After what I saw and heard about the Polk St scene I would not think twice about a bullet in the head of the predators who abused those kids. Which is exactly what that scene was. Child predators. What you saw in the video was a very sanitized version of what that scene actually was. As for what happened to those kids. If they turned tricks for more than 3 to 6 months on Polk in the 1980's then they would almost all have died of AIDs in the 1990's. Or committed suicide. Very few survived more than a decade. None survived without very serious damaged. Based on the people I knew and stories I heard runaways were about two thirds push / one third pull. Two thirds left home because of serious problems at home. Sometimes due to personality clashes. Often due to parents going through their own serious personal problems / family crises.. One third of the kids ran away because they were young and stupid. If some kind of contact with home was not quickly reestablished then bad things usually happened. Rapes / beatings / drugs / very abusive "relationships" / suicide attempts etc. The ones who lucked out survived as part of a "family" that looked out for each other. Plus there are a lot of good people out there. Random acts of kindness by individuals who are paying attention really do make a difference to kids on the streets. But the secret is to realize you can help people but you cannot "save" people. Only they can save themselves. As for Social Services, "Homeless" organizations etc. Totally useless. Support groups of those who have been through the experience are the only organizations that give any useful help. But there is a real limit to what outsiders can do. That very bright and articulate kid was heading towards self-destruction no matter what his parents did. Or anyone else. Knew a bunch of people just like him. They nearly always ended up dead. One way or another. Either in accidental OD's or more often suicide. The lucky ones ended up in prison long enough to turn their lives around. There is no "fixing" those people I'm afraid. For a start their profoundly traumatic early experiences on the streets are not something that can ever be "fixed". It was funny seeing the grim ER of SF Gen on Potrero Ave from before the rebuild. Very different now. Still the same great staff. Best hospital in SF.

Absolutely loved Gene and miss him to this day, besides “mastering” the tenor sax, selling out clubs here in the U.S. AND Europe especially after he got out of prison in 1969, he was a GREAT human being, had a BIG HEART, sweet person, & absolutely loved my late sis Gerry (his 2nd wife also known as the original “red top” and “Jeru”😏), & was a loving stepdad to my niece Roz....AND, just days before he slipped into a coma and passed away my mom whom he soooo loved and respected, led him there in the hospital, to give his life to Christ, he Sincerely cried like a baby in gratefulness to God and mom and her prayer team from church prayed and ministered with and to him for a few hours, he was so very happy and at peace at that point.🙏🏽
