Garcia was playing to thousands in both indoor and outdoor concerts- he needed huge amps because he wanted Clean clean clean.. Nobody needs a 200w McIntosh in their fucking bedroom-- Those clowns with 200w amps are ridiculous - they are buying a look- ANY blackface/silverface style amp will do the exact same thing (maybe not the champ)
In my guitar journey I’m at this point in time of nailing down the major scale to be able to play it everywhere on the neck and in any key. You hit the nail on the head, here - can’t overstate the importance of fundamentals of the major scale from which other scales are derived. Thanks for this breakdown!
Hey I love your videos so much, they have been amazing for learning all these dead tunes. I was wondering if you had a video talking about how Jerry uses the flattened third and mixes major with minor? That’s been the focus of my practice lately so any ideas are welcome!
So by getting the hubbub, you basically avoid the need to have two outputs on your guitar? But the cable that you were using out from the guitar is a stereo cable?
great lesson... another way to consider it from a harmony perspective is. Key of A/F#m. We make the iii chord Dominant which is Phrygian mode but give it a major 3rd instead of minor 3rd.(Phrygian Dominant) We borrow a chord from F# Harmonic minor. its a V7 to i cadence... C#7 to F#m. for the D#dim just visualize it as a D7 arpeggio but the root is raised... also there is D# diminished arp hidden in the A blues scale.
Yup exactly!!! Seeing the D#7 diminished as just just D7 with a raised root was a HUGE revelation for me. Makes it so much easier I think to visualize!
Amazing!!!Been waiting for something like this for Deal forever! Got my weekend planned out! Thank you so much! Gonna play it on my new Liger from Phred!! Can't wait till work is over today!! Thanks again!!
noice... good examples of different settings and effects with the hot rod. playing/groove is incredibly good! i modded mine a bit ( better reverb control, 12ay7 in the v1 preamp, and changed out all capacitors, and lifted some resistors,as they slowly burn the board)
I have playing guitar with some breaks since the late 80s. I spent way too much time on theory and not enough on songs and was honestly pretty terrible considering how much time I had spent playing. The last couple years I started playing with some locals in a shed, mostly Dead tunes. It forced me to learn those tunes and I now really enjoy playing rhythm guitar. There are so many ways to vary the way you play a song including bass lines and other additions. I also started singing which I never thought to do and I feel it has really helped me hear things better. There is a recent video by Trey describing the importance of timing that is worth watching before you dive into esoteric scales.
I have come to believe that learning complete songs does make you a better player. Doing so can highlight your weaknesses so you can work on and improve those elements. Thanks for your insight and I love your chill pup.
Hey Gabe, great share! Much to comment on. I remember my first days of learning guitar with friends in the 70s. Everyone was trading identifiable song licks for the big rock hits; Stairway, Sweet Home Alabama, Smoke on the Water, Fragile, Allman Brothers, etc. And when you have someone hearing you at a party say, "I love that song",and you respond with, "sorry, that's all I know"; It reinforces a bad personal vibe to your pursuit of music. You come up short, and it just doesn't feel good and you don't sleep because your self talk says, "I really need to learn the entire song". Our so called audience whoever they are, have a need for us to at least know the entire song structure from beginning to end (i.e., top to bottom). Even if we depend on technology (chord charts) and access ultimate for the chords. We should be motivated by this. For those of you stuck knowing only parts of songs, since you will be playing music for the rest of your life!, let the song teach you how to play your instrument. Study it for a week, a few months, etc, at your own pace. You will be playing it for many years to come. Especially when you're at a gathering and someone says, can you play Doctor My Eyes, and you just start playing it. Bravo, what a reward to your self to pull it out of your back pocket. How ever long it takes you will be surprised how many songs share the same structure, chords, progressions and before you know it, you'll be able to play 10 songs, by learning one! Lot's of rewards to be had. During the Pandemic, I started a Grateful Dead song study group where a few nights a week for 2 years we studied the songs using the sheet music, live recordings, and ultimate. We let the songs and resources teach us. After two years we can make our way through Help>Slip>Franklins, Let It Grow, and Lazy Lightening, Terrapin, and other double header tunes. And working as a group analyzing how something should be played vs what the internet said was also a wake up call for how something is really played. I refer back to your Deal video when I mentioned many folks just skip the E chord simply because there is bad paper work out there. Learning songs together requires being open minded and kind with other players and not getting stuck on wrong or right. We all agree, the songs teach us. As Dead Heads, we say, "the music plays us". But I think this applies to ALL music. Your video resonated with me. I didn't know you are in LA. By chance did you ever hop on JamKazam? If so, I think you would have blast playing to one of my sessions. I'm here in Northern CA. Latency, yes.. but you would be surprised what we figured out. By the way, learning HelpSlip, Terrapin, is not a one and done thing. It's a journey of learning for years. So many nuances Thanks again, great video.
7:56 Coincidence, I just finished giving a Running on Empty finger style lesson. Btw, I’m often guilty as charged for often learning the key parts and just summarizing the rest of a tune. Saves time at the cost of being able to truly add it to repertoire. You inspired me to learn something start to finish tonight
I love that Help on the way you did! This is the lesson that I needed to hear today. What is a good song to start? I know major & minor triads on the 4 sets if 3 strings, 7th chords rooted on 6,5, and 4th strings, major scale 5 positions and maj/min pentatonics. And how should I learn the song, by tabs? It is hard to learn all the pieces of the song and it is frustrating to figure out all the parts by listening and watching (is he fretting that?, did he pick the G string? )
Great Reminder, I would be interested to know which YTubers you find informational. Honestly I just found you a a few weeks ago and I have a lot of catching up to do with all your amazing content. Love the fact that you use the Dead to instruct some of the theory. You are the best thing I have found. Peas'
In 2018, I gave Unbroken Chain a try in its entirety. I was many years away from playing in my current band. It’s by no means a masterpiece, but I did muddle through the best I could with playing and singing. I kept this video set to private until recently as I’m ready to accept that’s where I was at the time. It’s still a full song despite its many blemishes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aVeg6-f_m9U.htmlsi=CZ77QZTUnBSHmJfi
Hey Gabe. Completely agree about learning full songs. However Unbroken Chain is not something I would tackle without a lot of time and effort. Have you done a lesson on it? Thanks! 😃
Um okay. That was the most perfect gear review I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot. Covered all the important sounds for me, single coil, humbucker hollow body, Jerry Tones and John tones. Wow, well done sir! Now where can I scrounge up 2500 hundred bucks 🤔
@@GabrielBergman95Thanks anyway. I'll just download the video so I can slow it down. IDK why but you can't drop the speed with RU-vid shorts. Sounds great BTW 💯
