The original railway was single track so only needed a single line tunnel. When the line was doubled about 40 years later it made more sense to dig a second single line tunnel than to enlarge the original - that would have required the line to be closed for several months - or to make a new two track tunnel.
I was on this train. Got the late night last train from Pickering that evening absolutely hammering it back behind the 8f - I swear the driver had it pushing 50mph between Pickering and Levisham.
