What do you think about using acrylic colours for this purpose?
@Brad-cs9jy

Old Yeller was my favorite as a child and a few years back I decided to get a 1st ed. and followed shortly thereafter with Savage Sam. Today I have nearly 100 books about dogs and have discovered authors I never knew that wrote multiple books about them. I also like reading about wolves and the canine/human connection and have acquired several in the nonfiction category as well.

Fun fact: the spanish version of charlie and the chocolate factory is translated from the original 1964 first version later from the newer edition of the book around 2010 or something they used the 1973 second version for the modern audience but you can still found the first edition online in spanish. Or in physical copy

I like these ideas. I used to have some Folio books when I was a teen and loved them. So nice. Now I'm into personal development books and was wondering about getting some of my favorites in 1st editions. I looked one up and can't seem to find anything on it. Are first editions still a thing for new books these days?
@SquirrellyNerdyJess
@SquirrellyNerdyJess 8 дней назад
@@therealjohnnyb2151 First editions definitely are a “thing,” but the collectibility factor very much depends on the book. If you haven’t already, definitely check out parts 2 and 3 of this series - part 2 specifically discusses first editions and part 3 discusses how to search for books to buy. 🤓

Thank you very much for this video. I recently got an art book for my favourite game and many of the pages are unfortunately stuck together. No matter how carefully I try to separate them with a ruler or a similar tool, they still sometimes rip and get slightly damaged. I feel like I'll just have to come to terms with the fact that there is nothing I can do

I recently found your channel and have loved binged watching many of your videos. So I hope you can answer 2 questions for me. 1) my 5 year old granddaughter wants to be a fairy doctor when she grows up (not a doctor with fairy patients, but rather, a grown up fairy who is also a doctor), so I was wondering if you have any specific children book recommendations for her love of fairys. And 2) where did you get that gorgeous green velvet chair? Thank you! I love your content!
@SquirrellyNerdyJess
@SquirrellyNerdyJess 12 дней назад
@@vasunseeker That’s so sweet! Thank you for watching. The chair came from Facebook marketplace. (Most of my furniture and clothes for that matter are second hand.) I love that your granddaughter wants to be a fairy doctor! When I was a kid, I wanted to be a “jumper maker” - a person who jumps around and makes things. 😂 I know of plenty of fairy books, but maybe not for that age necessarily. I will ask my mum-in-law who used to work in primary education and see if she has any suggestions! 😊🧚‍♂️
@SquirrellyNerdyJess
@SquirrellyNerdyJess 12 дней назад
@@vasunseeker Here are some recommendations from my sister-in-law who has two girls of her own: Twinkle series by Katherine Holabird (Angelina Ballerina); Felicity Wishes series; Isadora Moon - half fairy, half vampire but really good stories; Where’s the Fairy by Nick Harris which includes finding hidden fairies on each page (her youngest loved); and, Fairy Shopping by Sally Gardner. Also for something classic but not necessarily stories, the Cicely Barker Flower series has wonderful poems and illustrations. Both my mum-in-law and sis-in-law say to avoid the Rainbow Magic books. 😂

Since this type of damage is caused by the page emulsion melting and re-solidifying, possibly this technique combined with a hair dryer might help unstick pages easier and with less potential for damage. At least it might be worth testing.

With ink markings next to, or through, text, you can use a scalpel and disposable surgical blades to scratch off the offending marks without touching the printed text. There are blades with sharp points, and ones with curved edges, so you can go as detailed as you like. But it takes a lot of work.
@Beery1962
@Beery1962 25 дней назад
9:40 You can get out those rough patches by using an ultra-fine sandpaper. As long as the paper is thick enough, you can simulate a smooth texture and it will blend in with the rest of the page. However, if you have gone too deep, if you hold the page up to the light, although the texture will match, you will definitely be able to see light through the page where the erased portion was.
@Beery1962
@Beery1962 25 дней назад
I have found that a very fine sandpaper works better than an ink eraser. It also has the advantage that if you choose the right grit of sandpaper, you can simulate and therefore maintain the sheen of the paper. I use a heavier grit at first, and then go finer if the erased portion looks too rough. If it looks too smooth, go with a heavier grit. I've found that, in many cases, as long as you don't go too deep into the paper, you cannot tell that any erasure was made.

To get a more uniform result, and to minimize the possibility of liquifying the wax due to handling, have you tried using a heat gun to liquidize the polish and get it deeper into the fibers of the book? I've done this to restore the color of old shoes and boots, and it works well to reduce the appearance of scuffs and tears in leather, so I'm thinking it might also work well with books, making the color more even and more uniform.

I wish title pages were still written as short summaries of books. I like to purchase books at thrift stores and often they're missing their dust-jackets, which drives me inside to the introductions and forwards pages, which are not always concise and straightforward. The typesetting on the vintage books you shared is so beautiful!

"Just because something is old doesn't mean it's valuable." Thank you for clarifying that. I work as a coin dealer. I've been collecting for most of my life, and most people seem to think that, for example, bronze coins minted during the late Roman Empire must be valuable because they're thousands of years old. But we have a bucket of them; they're extremely common. When I started collecting books, I found out about this very quickly too.
