I'm 1st time learner, learning on my own . I'm trying to mend a whole in a quilt my grandma made me. I don't have any bedding or whatever you called it. Can I use these steps without it?
@BeckyGoldsmith
@BeckyGoldsmith 23 часа назад
I'll bet you mean batting-the fluffy cotton that fills and softens the space between the top and bottom layers of the quilt. You can mend the holes without it, and/or you can substitute a piece of fabric for the batting. Cotton flannel might be OK. Test it out before you sew. Pin the pieces of fabric that you intend to use in place, without batting or flannel between them, and see how it feels. It will be different and if you are OK with that, then that answers your question. Do you live near a quilt shop, sewing store, or quilt guild? If you decide you want some batting but don't want to buy a big one, introduce yourself in any of these places and see if anyone can give you a little scrap of batting. Quilters are very friendly :-). I hope this helps :-).

That's a beautiful quilt, not only the textiles, but the idea behind it. As a life long sew-ist and a perfectionist in sewing, I am working very hard to rid myself of the notion and the compulsion that my free hand quilting needs to be perfect.

The more you embrace the imperfections, the easier it is to let go and sew expressively. At least, that's working for me :-).

Wonderful video! After laundering the quilt did the appliqué still have the starched feeling? How flexible/inflexible would you say it is in comparison to the block?
@BeckyGoldsmith
@BeckyGoldsmith 28 дней назад
I could tell there was still starch after one washing. I can't remember if I washed it again and I gave it away soon after making it. I suspect that one or two washings ought to take care of it depending on your washer. Some wash with more water than others.

Thanks for this. I don't love the design, but I went ahead and ordered a box for the 2X Extra Firm core. I've been hoping Blackwing would come out with a firmer graphite. I am curious to see how it compares to the Natural Extra Firm.

Thanks Becky. Very informative. I’m going to be setting my mini aside and pulling out the full size while I construct some stationary curtain panels. They are the width of the bolt so there won’t be any room on the ironing board for it. I plan on experimenting with setting the iron on the metal rack meant for traditional irons attached to the end of my board. Do you have any concerns with my attempting this? Thanks, Cyndy age 75 and not as smart as I used to be.
@BeckyGoldsmith
@BeckyGoldsmith Месяц назад
I have that same metal shelf at the end of my board and it has openings that the feet of the iron can get stuck in if you aren't careful. Plus, the metal would get hot. I put a silicone iron rest over the metal part and that is working well. Here is a link to the one I use: pieceocake.com/products/49738428?_pos=1&_sid=6200df2f1&_ss=r

I am doing a circle of bias with leaves around the outside of it. How should I join the two ends of the bias? I have sewn the bias down as per your third style (on the drawn line of my big background contrasting square, place the the open bias strip that I made, a quarter inch from raw edge then fold over then deal with the second edge).
@BeckyGoldsmith
@BeckyGoldsmith 2 месяца назад
You have two choices with bias stem. One would be to applique the end of the top strip over the first end of the strip to join them. Or you can baste the bias strip in a circle to the block, find the place where the two ends will meet and piece them together to make a circle. Trim excess fabric leaving a 3/16" seam allowance. Finger press the seam allowances in one direction and then applique the bias circle in place. Or, if your pattern shows a circular stem, you could treat it like any other applique piece. Make a template of the circle, trace around it on a square of fabric. Finger press the inside and outside curves. Position it on your background. Cut away the fabric on the inside of the circle and applique it in place. Then trim away the excess fabric on the outside of the circle and applique it in place. All three methods work.

I always prewash my fabric so mine fabric is unlikely to shrink more. If you are using fabric that has not been washed, your should expect the fabric to shrink some. But other than that, I think they would wash. And probably air dry

Remember that the main goal is that what you sew together, stays together. The more you work on your applique skills, the better they will be but don't be too hard on yourself during the process.

Absolutely agree with everything you’ve said Becky. Such a set of wonderful tools that every quilter needs before they actually know it! Worth the investment, worth the time every moment you used them. I needed to buy the tools but forgot to get the tweeters! My only wish is to see more video tutorials on their use! I don’t believe enough time has been spent on encouraging their use in appliqué work. For me more video tutorials is a requirement in their use to recognise their importance in the craft of appliqué work! Thank you for sharing.❤⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
