Love this song, as I do all of Cat Steven's songs since I started listening to him back in 1971 when I was stationed in the Philippines. The SJ-200 was the perfect guitar for this lesson I think. Thanks for the lesson Mike and have a great weekend!
I find it impossible to maintain a D chord and have my thumb cover the 5th string. If I do, I mute the 1st and 2nd strings. Either my guitar neck is too big or my hands are too small.
@@dublinbluetune I get it Dub… no worries… try index on string 5 fret 2, middle on string 3 fret 2, and ring finger on string 2 fret 3. Play strings 5 through 2. It’s a simplified Bm (actually a Bm7), but works just as well in this tune. Thanks for watching!
@@donaldpeters338 Thanks Donald! I don’t. After I bought this 000-15M, I played a 000-15SM, but didn’t like the playability as much. Maybe it was just the one at my local dealer…. I still am on the lookout for one. The tone on the SM is so good!

I'd heard of drop D tuning but not double drop D tuning. I gave it a try....and I must say that it makes me sound like a half decent guitarist. I'm sticking with it so as to explore it's possibilities.
Ahh Mike, what a fantastic rendition. Like this much more as an acoustic number. Got an addictive quality to it. Your timing is enviable, I'm working hard to keep the chords going while trying to sing at the same time...I'll perservere and hopefully it will click. Been listening to Petty a lot especially the Highway Companion album - Down South and Ankle Deep are ones i want to have a go at. Thanks for your lessons Mike
@@campfire_guitar_lessons yes, thank you Mike. Recovery on schedule and all seems good. Will see consultant in a couple of weeks and hopefully all will be good 👍 🙏
Tom Petty was a legend .He was one of the most respectful artist .He right off tell you the black hearts was the best band and he was proud to have them play with him .He was a true legend .I miss the man terribly he was my music hero as far im concerned. When I heard he past this lifetime was one truelly a heart breaking day for me .Long live Tom.Petty music .I sure hope to hear him sing when I get to heaven see my long lost 9 year old daughter that lost her battle with cancer in 2006 .I grant you there miliions that miss Tom Petty I'm not alone .He was one the greatest.
Mike I love this song. I modified the picking pattern. Bass , rake with PIM and 1 and 2. For 1,2,3,4 and the then of the choirs the full DU with expression. My voice is like yours, I’ve lost my upper range.
@@peted6812 Thanks Pete! I heard it on a soundtrack to an Apple TV show and remembered what a cool song it was. I had to modify it to make it a wee bit simpler and more linear. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! Sounds fabulous! I think I jacked up the strumming on my attempt! That’s why I defer to excellence! Great version/video!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A78jDBMBMJc.htmlsi=5H7KYk6j3Yr7jY6U
@@goodtimefolkrock Thanks GTFR. I made that disclaimer in the video, and in the description. I sliced and diced and reconstituted this to make it easier to play.
@@ConjuntoFan Thanks Tony! …and you can play it on your SJ-200! BTW, I changed to custom light strings… Elixir 11-52 nanoweb, and it sounds much less harsh.
@@campfire_guitar_lessons Well, it sounds great! I am trying D’addario XS, but I’m having a hard time fretting some chords especially the F and Bm which are a pain for me anyway. Might need to get another setup done. The only strings I had ever used in it are the Elixirs Nanoweb PB 12s. Maybe I need to put mine next to the computers speaker so it can learn from yours…jeje!!! I know it is the pilot and not the airplane!
@texhaines9957 Thanks Tex! I’ve pinned the chords and lyrics as the top comment in the comments section. If you want to get on my email distribution list for weekly PDFs, you can email me at ca.martinez@guitarsforvets.org.
@@campfire_guitar_lessons I never clicked onto your RU-vid where there were no comments. I know you pin the chords in comments, but there were no comments to view. Must have happened while you were adding them. I just happened to be online, and the RU-vid notice popped and I clicked.

@@campfire_guitar_lessons My Pops left me 56 super jumbo. Sunburst. My siblings an i all play. My brother has it now. He hat it refreted recently. I want a newer one that i wudnt die if something happened to. That Gibson sound is very nostalgic to me. Subbing.
@cds1223 That 56 SJ is worth a lot! I hear you on the Gibson tone… just bought a 2002 J-185 that I found while on vacation. Sweet tone in an unassuming package. Thx for the sub!
@@campfire_guitar_lessons yessir. I truly wudnt trade it for any guitar in the world. No matter whos it was but My bro took it upon himself to have it frets and fretboard replaced and about to 3k of work done to it so he claims it now. Idv rather had on it what my Dad wore out. Whatever. Yes i love that Gibson sound. I like it over many Martins. The big ones atleast. SJ. ✌️
Love this song and the double dropped D tuning. I made a capo that I can put on the second fret that leaves the E strings open so it provides a double dropped E. It was fairly easy to modify an inexpensive capo to make this custom capo. If anyone is interested in seeing how I made this capo, just let me know.
That’s fantastic Mike - many many thanks for this. Saw Robert plant do this live a while back and loved this song and your version and teaching has enabled me to add it to my repertoire along with quite a few of your dropped and double dropped d songs. The Beatles “rain”. “ man of constant sorrow” and “gallows pole” amongst them. I’ve also discovered along the way that you can use this tuning for great versions of “Venus in furs” by the velvet underground and “tomorrow never knows” by the Beatles . You’ve really taken my playing to new areas I would never have gone to without the double dropped d tuning. And you’re style of teaching is just perfect for me. Thanks again and keep em coming my man .
@@johnkelly1065 Thanks brother John! Appreciate it… that Gibson and I found each other serendipitously one week ago in a little store in northwestern USA. Love at first strum! Take care, mate!
Great one Mike. I'll have to try this on my Iris ABe, which is their version of a Gibson J185. But my Iris has a few upgrades and downgrades: stain open pore finish, torrefied Adirondack top, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (unmatched), soft "V" neck, with a burst, K&K pickup, and Sarah paint. Very good sound.
@@texhaines9957 Thanks Tex! Nobody knows acoustic guitar hardware better than you! This 22 year old J-185 has a definite vibe… easy to play and tone full. Shallower C neck than its descendants. Nice thick mids. A surprisingly good pickup for me! Thanks for watching!
@@ConjuntoFan Thanks Tony. Yes, it’s a “new to me” 2002 Gibson J-185. I found it at a great little boutique guitar store called McKenzie River Music in Eugene, Oregon. I’ve always been intrigued by the small jumbo cousin of the SJ-200, but had never played one. It’s got a short scale and comfortable, smaller waist. Have a great weekend, yourself!
