I wish someone would collect all the scenes where Dennis functions the conscience of the gang and makes them pump the brakes on some cruel and terrible idea (which mostly happened in early episodes). Dennis is mostly presented as a literal sociopath and/or psychopath, but he has never been written evenly because for the group dynamic to work story wise, there must be a member of the gang who serves as the level-headed conscience of the group, so Dennis basically jumps between an empathetic individual to a full out psychopath depending on whether or not the story requires it. That is fine for the storylines, but it means he is never written believably.
Thing is psychopaths are surprisingly good at passing for "good" people. Even though they don't care about morality, they understand society's perception of morality and how being perceived as 'evil' could inconvenience them. So even Dennis being the "conscience" could simply be him recognizing "this is terrible in a way that doesn't benefit me".
Dennis is often a man of logic...unless a car of his is somehow involved, the car being an extension of him...then he becomes so stupid,its borderline retardation.
You guys only agree with Shane because you see yourselves as Shane in these scenarios. Like you'd be cool with getting shot in the leg and then torn apart to save other people. (And I don't mean volunteering, I mean getting blindsided like Otis did.) Everyone agrees that the lives of the many outnumber the lives of the few, until they realize that they're the few and have 0 opportunities of changing it. Was what Shane did tactical? Sure, but it's also selfish when Shane sacrificing himself would have had the same result as him sacrificing Otis.
Lots of people supporting Shane here. But I have to say what he did was wrong. The most important reason of all, and the reason for the show’s existence, is the group keeping its humanity. Once the human race devolves to selfishness, like what Shane was thinking (save his life instead of a chance to lose his if both live), then humanity is already dead, just like the zombies. And don’t tell me that Shane’s reason to go on the mission was to help Carl. He was already told by Lori to leave her family alone and he would have been nicer to Carl later on if that was his intention. No, Shane’s reason to help Carl was for his selfishness. By volunteering for this mission, he hoped to gain his respect and power back. He wants to be in charge of the group. Shane’s reference of Rick as too “weak” is evidence of that. But instead, Shane got guilt which lead to his downfall. Both of them could probably still survive if they just kept walking. Otis was actually walking faster than Shane due to Shane's injury. And another important point: *By killing Otis, you are basically giving a death sentence for Sophia.* Otis knew the woods and I believe if he teamed with Daryl, Sophia would have been found alive. He was the only character aside from Daryl that is still capable of doing missions. (Shane with ankle injury, Rick from blood loss). And Otis seemed to be a decent fellow I would want in my group.
I understand shanes thinking here in that if they both die so does Carl but they would've gotten to the truck even injured they had quite a distance between them & the walkers
I feel so bad for Otis, all he was trying to do was help. I get what Shane did though and tbh I might have done the same thing in that situation. You either kill or be killed, I'm bigger better stronger this fat man wont survive much longer anyway.
