A couple of geek dads who enjoy all manner of tabletop wargames as well as good old board games and even roleplaying with pencil, paper and odd shaped dice!
As we're geekdads our time is always slight and thus we try and focus more on having fun with the games we play and helping explain the mechanics to other potential newbies to the games rather than coming up with uber competitive lists and ways to abuse the rules or come up with killer combinations to gain an edge in tournaments.

I love Voidcursed Thralls with Velmorn's gang. They dont lose defense (dont put it on Velmorn himself) and gives you some really nice objectives and power cards. The curse really screws warbands with long range attacks or special actions. I pwned one of my friend's Dormitans with Force of Frost who has been "haunting" me for some time and did really well vs Hexbane Hunters with Breakneck Slaughter (I lost the 2 games but it was really close whereas normally is a sound beating for me).
Elathain's Soulraid with Force of Frost, or The Crimson Court with path of Prophecy are my main favorites. Garrek's Reavers with Brekaneck Slaughter won't win you battles, but "voltroning" on of the Barbarians up for a huge dice amount, massive damage one turn frothing from the mouth cannon is hilarious.
Hey guys, I’ve noticed you mentioned Force of Frost being nerfed in a couple of videos. Returning playing here who just picked up the Deathgorge starter - May I ask what’s been nerfed about the deck?
If you go through the cards on Underworldsdb you can see which ones have been erratad www.underworldsdb.com/shared.php?deck=0,FO1,FO2,FO3,FO4,FO5,FO6,FO7,FO8,FO9,FO10,FO11,FO12,FO13,FO14,FO15,FO16,FO17,FO18,FO19,FO20,FO21,FO22,FO23,FO24,FO25,FO26,FO27,FO28,FO29,FO30,FO31,FO32&format=rivals&deckname=Force%20of%20Frost%20Rivals%20deck
@@AgentsofSigmar as long as you keep Vortemis alive it's a fun deck. Narvia and Turosh are still useless, but I use them as meat shields to keep to others alive.
I havn't won but have had some joy using Force of Frost as it can give you a backup if Vorty goes down and you can play for Ice Counters. But those are the two for Eyes for sure. I scored 15 with it once which is a record for Eyes in my group (we only started playing in Harrowdeep)
Spearhead is an amazing game! Absolutely love it. Combat patrol on the other hand is complete and utter trash, you can get a custodes patrol with over 800 points, or you could get a space marine patrol with 400 points… seems super balanced 😂
While the points difference in spearhead are similarly all over the place they’ve done a much better job of balancing it with reinforcements and stopping units entering til later in the game etc. we agree though this game is much better than combat patrol and the amount of effort invested is much more evident
May wanna change the video title or something, new to AoS this didn’t really explain much. Came away thinking I need to watch something else. Felt more like a review at times
We have a couple of other videos that might help you. A full game we played live and a quick 10 min game which goes through what happened but maybe not so much how it happend.
This format is great if you don't want to spend the time on a longer video. That said while nice, I much like the full game. You can better appreciate the ebb and flow of the game.
Yeah. The difference in recording/editing time is somewhere in the region of probably 4 hours though so it’s easy to see why we did this. We’ve found the longer the video the less views/watch time it gets 🤷♂️
Great format. Keep it as is or add a 2-3 (or 15) minutes of post-game analysis. Also, I see you have Zone Wars in the back. I really want to see content on that Andy Chambers game!
So played a couple games, I'm finding that Stormcast is just too powerful. Skaven does not have the means to stop them, scoring too many points early just backfires in that they are the underdog, use all the twist abilities and bend you over for the finish. I really wanted to like this game, but im feeling a little jaded. It seems impossible to keep Skaven characters alive. Impossible to kill the Stormcast general. He deletes units, the Stormcast models reinforcing are far superior to clanrats. How are you guys finding it to be?
Maybe I'm (Robin) not very good, but so far all the games have been close. If I had a concern about balance it's that in most of our games whoever goes first has come out on top. But we haven't played enough yet to really tell if that's an aberration.
That was a mistake, We initially planned to record the final round in one reel/short so I brought 6 back over 2 turns but in the end it was too long so we had to do them as separate rounds
Love the format. I would like to see one or two spotlights per player turn where you roll camera for an important charge or roll, or just for some prime trash talking!
That’s a nice idea. Though difficult to achieve without recording all of it to capture the right moments. And then there’s the difficulty of fitting it into a minute, but something we’ll bear in mind 😊👍
Dig the format gents. 2 main take away from this too me are some units just aren’t suited for spearhead format & that IGOUGO is a broken mechanism. Given the game scale this format really should be alternating activations.
Can’t say I’ve noticed much of a problem with the IGOUGO format in spearhead so far. Some units are tougher but they’ve handled that nicely by removing some teeth for spearhead and also the reinforcements or by not allowing you to bring them on til later. Those liberators shined this game but in other games have achieved little
Absolutely loved the format! Great that it was so fast. The first really clear repport, and I Also still learned the basic rules, keep them comming. You can offcourse make variations in lenght for different videos. Cheers 🍻
The video was constructed from the perspective of somebody who already knew how to play AoS. But we do have a full playthrough amongst our Live videos.
Because Spearhead has some differences to AoS and most people who watch our videos have some knowledge of how to play AoS. If we had to do a video of how to play AoS for somebody who knew nothing it would take about 2 hours.
@@doogie14Spearhead is an entirely different way to play than AoS, however it still uses the same “code.” It’s very helpful to know what rules/abilities and all that apply in spearhead, since there are many glaring admission and omissions.
Sorry fellas, love your stuff, but this ain't it. This could've been titled differently, I guess, but it's sure not a How to Play video. I have absolutely ZERO idea how to play Age of Sigmar, and based on this video, I still have no idea, how to setup, how to move vertically, how to check the atributes and how to roll, how to keep the minis in a unit closer and by how much, the phases, all of that. Nothing. I know that if I was really interested in Spearhead I would be reading the rulebook myself, but just stumbling upon this video, it's more of a summary, as you said, than an actual how to play. Just my 2 cents :)
I think there’s a misconception that Spearhead IS AoS. AoS is the game, Spearhead is the gamemode. This is the parameters for how to play the gamemode, not game. Seems clear to me but I can see the confusion, I suppose
I just bought this game. I don't know anything about how to play. My LGS told me this is more of a boardgame than Warhammer 40k is strategy. I like that I like the idea of something a little less complex til I understand stuff much more
The Dread Pageant seems pretty beginner friendly. They have a decent rivals deck, the fighters are pretty solid even though their inspiration mechanic is awful. I wonder why they did not make it to your list.
Awesome stuff, thank you! As a total beginner, I would appreciate seeing a picture of the warband as you speak about it, since I'm not able to identify them by name yet.
Have you got an inside line on rivals of the mirrored city getting a reprint? I can't see it anywhere on the Warhammer site or find any 3rd party retailers with stock.
We discounted them for a few reasons. They can get complex, the uninspiring and inspiring can be confusing for new players and they’ve been errata’d to boot
@@AgentsofSigmarI was going to say they’re also pretty hard to find. I lucked out my LGS still had a copy sitting there. I also had the advantage of having played the game in Shadespire-Nightvault days so it was more a refresh of understanding than truly new. I found it fascinating that the two war bands my friend has been playing came direct off this list - he picked up wintermaw because he loved the skinnerkin look, and he picked up gorechosen of dromm at the same time I picked up wyrdhollow
I quite like skabbiks for teaching people about hold. Only downside is that Skritter has had an errata. Other than that they are pretty straightforward and folks like smacking people with the two big rats once you get them inspired
They are fairly straightforward but we discounted them as they’re not particularly tough and their inspiration mechanic combined with the faff of desecrating the zones can be a bit disheartening for a newer player when they don’t get it right. But they are a nice warband to play! 👍
Well my dudes had their entire model line removed, unless GW brings them back on a later day. l am on one side unable to play and unwilling to buy more boxes. If GW does bring my dudes back ,then l am willing to try it out . I hope the rules will be free online, because l don't plan to buy anymore books from GW ever. I bought a ton of books to know what the rules and how/what to build my army. Played around 30 games in 3 years , and it is just not worth to pay for so few games to have the army removed.
Looks like all the core rules just came out, not sure which line of models you had, it can be a bit disheartening when they remove your favourite lines though but sometimes that just means a game system isn’t for you I guess 🤷♂️
If you look at how GW is changing the Combat Patrol box sets, they are preparing Combat Patrol for a Spearhead like makeover. If you buy the game from GW you get the double sided tokens.
I haven't seen this change. A similar game on the 40k side could definitely drag us in. Though it's a lot of painting for the channel, even with cut down armies!
As a counterplay, it is very important when placing objectives that they don't get 3 objectives on their side. You can usually prevent that in the following way: if SG wins rolloff, longboard them and put your 2nd token in no-ones territory. This usually prohibits that 3 objectives end up at SG side (it is mostly 2 on their side and 1 in no-one). If counter player wins the rolloff and SG doesn't longboard you, then put a token in the middle, near no-one territory. That leaves space for the other 2 tokens which ends up with 3 tokens on your side. It doesn't win you the game automatically, but it helps.
you can't fit two objectives in no-ones territory if you long board. And, personally, if my opponent long boards for me when Im playing Seppy G I'm pretty much in the perfect position 😄
Only thing I'd add for new players is something on deployment. I like to deploy as follows: Sepulchural Warden as far from the enemy as possible. Petitioners in the middle of my board, preferably within 2 of Objectives. Champion, Harvester and Prince up front. I want these guys to absorb hits with their 3 wounds. Also, when I raise them their stats are better. Unlike the majority I play these guys as a Flex warband as this is my preferred playstyle, but these setup principles should stand however you play them.
They are great. If you want to play them, they will die a lot, they will bleed the glory, but all you have to do is raise them back and score faster then your opponent. If there is anything else to do, then don't attack with them. Get to objectives instead. Fight only if you need to kick off opponent's warrior from the objective. Actually, I think the best deck for them is Fearsome Fortress at the moment, even better than the ones you mentioned. But, Malevolent Masks are close behind. Their weak spot is the Warden. If you play against them, then simple do not kill the other models. You can wound them on your way to the Warden (e.g. take 2 wounds from Champ or Prince), but do not finish them. Instead, get through them to the Warden and kill her first. Ideally, you have some tricks to do that, eg. Gryselle's Arenai or Skaven move very fast, or Leona gives flying trait to the whole Stormcoven warband, to help get through the skeleton wall.
Sepulchral guard .. the only unit from underworld brought to AoS and forbidden to play GW tournaments even having AoS 4ules by official FAQ at the beginning ^^
@@markreynolds1436 you should ask gw^^ but it's true, till third edition Soulblight Gravelords battletome, Sepulchral guard was not usable in official AoS tournament by FAQ
Love hearing about these guys. I feel like they’re a classic. Who doesn’t like walking skeletons in fantasy games? I’m really curious to learn more about other warbands, perhaps your take on Ephilim’s Pandemonium because i just finished painting them
