I’d forgotten that Ferrari were the only other serious team besides McLaren to run the turbo engines that year. They sounded great with a great turbo whistle but dramatically underperformed that season.
Fantastic footage. Sure isn’t like this anymore!!!! How amazing to get up and close to cars and drivers. Fantastic memories for you. I believe I saw Ayrton race in F3 at Oulton but don’t remember it unfortunately. My first experience of F1 was 1998 Silverstone qualifying and was much much different!
Senna and the plane. So eccentric its great. We went to most of the races around then, my aunt got tickets for us through Marlboro as she worked at duty free. Good times.
Brilliant footage, unique and all the greats on camera. The 80s was the best era by a mile the cars were all radically different with designers having the freedom to be different within the broader regulations.
What really strikes you in this footage is the sheer accesibility for the fans...I recall 2 years earlier have a similar walkabout on the Friday before the '88 GP there...Now only moronic celebrities who have little or no knowledge or interest in the sport seem to get access...😒
What a video, I came across your channel by chance watching Driver 61 video regarding on Adrian Newey, and I saw some footage of yours that he used. I was only 1 years old when this video was made and I'm super jealous that you was able to be that close to Senna, Piquet, Prost the lot! I love how Senna was messing around with his RC aeroplane, while others were on deep thoughts on their jobs😂, If this happened in todays world there would be so much security press you name it, but back then despite being a tyre test it so cool to see how everything was so much simpler. I wish F1 was still like this today it's a far cry compared back then. Great video very wholesome with your Dad, wish my Dad had the time to take me but he was always working and never really had the time. What a gem of a video awesome! 👍
Back when one could casually walk into a garage to ask for an autograph. Imagine trying to do that these days during a test session. Amateur footage videos from the distant past always make me feel like I'd be in those situations physically, even when the footage is old enough for me not to have even been born yet, lol.
Pick it up at 8:50 and watch Darron Gibbs take out Anthony Cleal! You can't see it in this video, but someone bumped Gibbs earlier in the race and Cleal nipped through the gap. Gibbs thought it was Cleal that bumped it, but it wasn't... So, he ruined someone else's race for nothing. (Not that he should have done that anyway)! I hope he apologised when he realise he got the wrong person.
