Love the video. Thank You! So great that you can leave it alone to do its thing! Can you leave the selector in 'vent' and not remove it? Its a good idea to stick to canning vinegar which is 5%,
You don't need an oxygen absorber. You need a Silica gel packet. You don't have to wait for it to seal. After the pump stops, just hit stop. It saves the heat bar.
Thank You, I just had a birthday and my family gave me the beautiful canner I AM SO EXCITED, I enjoyed your explanation was very clear. I hope you will do more canning Demos. Again thank You for your time this was greatly appreciated, new to your channel keep canning I will be tuned in I can't wait to start.
I like the info. Thanks for the video. If I can just comment on something, is that you can use a tripod and set your camera in it so you can use both hands and also prevent the camera from Moving a lot.
I talked to my appliance repair man. He said if I had seen how many times he’s seen glass tops bust, I would never do it. Even with the water bath canners. So now I’m using a propane camp stove set up in our ventilated garage. Makes me sad. I love canning in the house as I can watch my canner while I do everything else. Now I’m checking my canner running back and forth. We are not set up for gas, so I guess this will never happen.
I’m so happy I found your video today. I’m using my new canner for the first time today and appreciate your tutorial and remarks on it. Thank you for taking the time to post
When I was homeschooling one of my daughters she was so interested in the Amish that we did a study on the Amish. We even made a trip from FL. to Lancaster, PA. and it was such an exciting trip. We took a ride in a Mennonite buggy. At night we would look over the hills and see all the gas lights over the hills. The Amish live a simple life but they work very hard. I believe because they work hard and have skills that that is what helps their youth stay out of trouble without the teenage problems we sometimes have.
About 25 years ago I followed The Hallelujah Diet which was vegan and mostly raw. My husband would say, we can’t eat out because of the diet. I did it about a year and felt great but it was not easy and I began to read about people who were on it several years and developed health problems. I also was learning that our bodies, especially our brains, need healthy fats. I think homesteading is also a mind set and a process. You need to start slowly implementing things into your life where you are at whether that be an apartment, subdivision, etc. Do what you can such as cooking from scratch, canning, baking bread, finding natural ways to treat colds, pain, etc. like growing herbs, drying them for tea or making herbal tinctures and spices. Learning to see, crochet or knit.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I bought a Presto Digital Canner and could not figure it out. I know I read the book of instructions on it but I don't remember reading that you had to push the green knob on the front to advance it. I was approved to return it. I printed off the label they sent me. Took it to an Amazon pkg drop off last week. Came home today and it was setting on my porch with a note it had the wrong label on it! I decided I wasn't suppose to return it. I had watched a tutorial from the company two weeks ago when it came. It didn't help. I found yours and now I am anxious to give it another try. Thank you so much for your instructions. I am anxious to see now if I can do it right!
Thanks to you I have tomato juice on canning right now, I couldn't have done it without your video! I do have a question that maybe you can answer. The control panel does not light up on my canner. Each individual step will light up but not the whole panel. Is there something I need to do to turn it on?@@gentlysustainable1988
I seen when you took the jars out of the canner you tested for the seal on the lids but you also tightened the bans. Everything I see and read says you are not supose to tighten the bands after canning. Is there a reason you do?
Interesting channel and very interesting challenge. Enjoyed your video. I have an electric canner but have not tried it yet. There are only two of us and I would like to do small batches.
I just got mine today......loving all these helpful videos:) I have been making fridge pickles, because I was loathe to take out my canners in this heat. Tomorrow, I will get ahead of my cuke harvest and pressure can some bread and butter and garlic dills. Next som zucchini pickles, and tomato sauce. (no Meat, just a marinara) I'm looking forward to canning soups and broth too. I recently retired, and planning a much bigger , eat n store garden for next year, so I think this will become well used.
I would like to buy this pressure canner, but I am on the fence regarding food safety. My intent was to use it for low acid items. But I recently watched Rose Red’s review (she used the gadget you referred to) and one thing she said was that she made a thick pasta sauce in quarts and the kill zone time was not enough to make them shelf stable. My intent was to do vegetables and broth but also some meat based items like pasta sauce and stews. I also wanted to use it for canning pumpkin purée for pies and she said not to do that. The Presto is quite pricey so I am wondering if it would be a good investment, I have ordered it twice from Amazon and then cancelled! What are your thoughts?
Yes, I watched that too, but truthfully, I usually water can my tomatoes, and don't put meat in it. I mostly make a marinara sauce, and add meat or sausage, meatballs, braciole in at the time of cooking. I've only freezed any leftover meat sauce, so I think this will be fine for me.
I'm using mine for the first time and I stressed over the regulator. It didn't just pull off and I didn't want to break something by pulling too hard. Thank you for showing each step. I'm an experienced canner but the learning curve for new gadgets is a pain. I've always heated my jars in the dishwasher. Nice to know I don't have to do that with this canner.
Pam, of Rosered Homestead is probably the lady you speak of that used the hi-temp data logger to document time and temp every minute throughout the entire process. She and her channel ... Just phenomenal ! A trusted canning channel. Thank you for your video. My new presto precise canner should be here inva couple days. WAHOO!
@@gentlysustainable1988 Thank you so much for getting back to me. I never thought of the difference, but after reading your essay on beef stock, you now have a convert. Do you happen to have a recipe for vegetable stock that you have taken to the next level? Thank you again, suzie
@@suzieblair8089 Hello again! I don't have a post about vegetable stock but I'm going to include a recipe link for how I make it, which is from scraps. I'm also going to include my post about how to make turkey stock and soup, which can be used for chicken stock as well. I'm glad you've got the "canning bug"! www.gentlysustainable.com/canning-turkey-soup/ www.allrecipes.com/recipe/280064/vegetable-scrap-stock/
Thanks for this! I’m very new to canning. If I make my own soup, stew, or chili - can I pressure can that? I’ve heard you are supposed to only use tested recipes.
You are a great instructor! I also have been a bit confused as I have watched how to Presto videos and my canner is due to arrive today. Clear step-by-step instructions and valuable tips on what to do and not to do. Thank you some much for sharing with and helping us newbies 😊
I just received my Presto digital canner and I cannot wait to try it out! Currently looking for videos about using it! Hope many batches can you do in a row?
Hi there! The Presto is self-adjusting, you don’t have to set the pressure. Here’s the PDF from the company that explains… www.gopresto.com/downloads/canning/Digital_Canner_Facts_and_FAQs_v21c.pdf?fbclid=IwAR19l-WpWKusibrAvUrV4lJKKHYHAPG7IeMQ87_h9nQlLgIlRskYZmNw6t8
So is there any possible way to adjust the pressure? Rose red homestead tested hers and says its automatic set to 15 pounds, I only need 11 lbs. Does it make any difference as long as its higher pressure than needed? I'm confused about this but otherwise love this canner.
Thank you for sharing! I just got this canner and was about to send it back, the directions are not clear to me. I tried it again and it was so easy, thank you!
Hello. What canning book are you using please? I purchased a Ball home preserving book, and to my surprise it has mainly jams and salsa’s. What I need is soups, beans, etc. Thank you. I am new to canning.
Rose is the lady with a gadget. She is a real life scientist. I just got mine for Christmas and have it on its first run. So far loving it. Didn't have to break out the step stool to reach my big pressure canner on the stove.
I actually just bought mine, I’m pretty good at canning but for the life of me couldn’t figure out what fill jar meant…lol. I had already filled them, and wasn’t sure. This video is amazing and know I know what to do and when, and I think I’m going to love this item. To me it was so confusing and I got so upset. But now you’ve walked me thru it and I love this! Your awesome!
I use my presto to can chili last night and I and I got some leakage on two jars. I had 1 inch head space and wondered if I should have put the jar lids tighter than finger tight or if I should have used more than an inch of headspace on chili, thank you for your video.
Hi Clave! If your jars sealed, I wouldn't worry about it. I would not tighten your jars any more than finger tight and one inch of head space is plenty. I think it was probably just one of those things. Congrats for canning chili!
@@gentlysustainable1988 1 jar sealed , 2 did not. Would you re-process. Can I can chili after it has been refrigerated for 2 days? Hope this helps others
@@misarse You can reprocess but you're going to have to start the entire process again: sterilize jars, new lids, heat up chili and jars, etc. If it were me, I would give it another try and see what happens. Make sure you wipe the mouth of the jar before placing lid and ring. Let me know how it goes.
In cleaning my Presto digital pressure canner for the first time use, the “positioning tab” on the lid, fell right off! Do you know if it is safe to can without it? I cannot find the answer anywhere! If you could help I would appreciate it!
Hi there! From your question, it sounds like you're talking about the pressure regulator, it's circular. If I'm correct about the part you're talking about, that piece is supposed to come off and you put it on after the venting process is complete. I discuss that in my video. If I'm not correct here, please let me know, I want to help you figure this out.
Thanks so much for this video! I've been canning for years and I've only done it with this combination. I just bought a brand new bigger granite ware canner and for the first time noticed this warning. I was so upset! But thanks to your video, I'm canning on! I just needed someone else to show me lolz
