Why would council consider funding a celebration of Juneteenth?? Doleman organization had the opportunity to request funds by fully completing application process and failed to do so. No funding should be given to any party that does not follow the procedure. We are already paying for Weaton Park, Boy/Girls building, new Doleman Museum and Community Center, documentary of Jonathan st. house. Really, now fund a party??

This city builds parking decks and stadiums.but not a shelter for homeless women. By ignoring this need, I accuse the City of Hagerstown, of not giving a single thought or dollar, to protect the good women of this city. The Salvation Army has lost funding for its meager shelter. Time for the city to act like Christians, even if they don't practice it!!!
Yes, Juneteenth was more of a Texan thing and slowly spread in recent decades throughout the country. Being from Texas, I've long been familiar with it. It's good to see it gaining recognition.
I see where Kevin Simmers is coming from, but I also don't think he understands how the brain works in early recovery. He wants peers to be less than 2 years in recovery to meet with people in addiction. That could be an issue. I'm not saying it 100% won't work, but I will say it's a 50/50 chance. When you're in early recovery, your brain is still getting back to "normal," taking on other people traumas could be a trigger. Even years in recovery it can be, but you're more likely to be affected when you're in early recovery. I also think that it's a good idea for an open counseling center. However, there are places out there that do that now. Maybe they aren't open 14 hours a day. However, money could be used to open the facilities longer that already exist instead of building more. Bc let's be real. The south end is kinda far for most of the people on the streets in addiction. Yes, there's a bus route, but whose paying for them to catch a bus out there? There are a lot of questions I think need answered first. Again, this is my opinion, but I think this is something that needs to be looked into further before coming to an agreement.
