Welcome to my garden in central Scotland where I grow all sorts of plants, fruit, veg and flowers. Oh, and I also keep bees, quail and chickens aka my little dinosaurs. Through this channel I will take a light-hearted and informative look at the trials and tribulations and complete and utter joy of gardening, as well as look at keeping chickens and quail as pets and for eggs, and bees for honey.
I moved to my current home in 2022 and am basically creating the garden from an overgrow and neglected mess to something that is both productive and an oasis of calm. Prior to this I was in the west of Scotland where I built my garden from scratch. I have learned how to garden through practical experience and experimentation. I have made lots of mistakes along the way but also have had my fair share of success. My chickens regularly feature in my videos, as well as making impromptu appearances. I can’t tell you how much fun it is to have them around. Please come and join me.
I would be very happy with those Mags. Moisture content is key to getting all the potatoes to a good size so water more regularly than you are at the moment if you want bigger spuds. An excellent harvest in my eyes, main crop will give you the best results, but anything is better than nothing. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Hi there. Yup I think you could go with less than that but will be interested to see your harvest. I’m sure it will be good. You may get lots of smaller potatoes rather than fewer larger ones. It’s great fun harvesting them in any case.
Great minds think alike. I did my first bucket of spuds today. Only got a couple of pounds but more than enough for a couple of meals for one so I’m happy. Off to make some home made potato salad with all the little nippy ones.
Well I'm new to potatoes this year. I might have early blight and be yanking. I have to analyze today, now that the weather has cleared. We went from stupid hot and dry to wet and humid. Will probably pull if it looks like it as not to risk other plants. I love potatoes at the size you harvested.
Wow, I just love your space. The chickens are so cute. I can’t believe how amazing your heucherella and Hostas look. Your sweet peas are looking so big too. Mine have been really small this year. I’ve subscribed to your channel and can’t wait to watch all your videos. 😬
Hi there and thank you. The hostas in the pots ( as you said in your recent vid) do much better than those in the ground. I have some in the front garden and they are already laced with slug and snail holes 🥺. My Sweetpeas have started flowering but have taken a beating in today’s winds. Wish we would get some summer weather. Take care. Mags
Hi Mags lovely to see the chickens wondering around great looking birds, Your Ne Plus Ultra got higher than ours , remember the pods on them swell before the peas inside do , val likes your round metal beds .
Hi. They are healthy looking big plants for sure. Yes, I'll remember not to harvest too early :) I'm pleased with the beds I have to say. All the best. Mags
I love the poppies I have planted but I'm wary about the annuals because I inherited a garden that has them everywhere and they are a nightmare to get rid of ! Gary the Gargoyle is my only one but I do have several green men on the trees :)
Looking super, Mags. Very productive. Loving the chickens as usual - and your old girlie - even if they do dig up your strawbs! You still love them! LOL!
Hello Mags, I love the oriental poppies each year the clump grows and they give more flowers, they are spectacular. Everything is looking lovely. The Hosta look amazing 🤩 The potatoes look fab 👍 Lovely white Aliums 😊🌱
Hello Mags, what a lovely wholesome video, lots of lovely things harvested and lots more planted which is always nice. I have got some more lettuce and some courgettes to harvest. I can’t wait to harvest my garlic but still waiting as I know it’s not ready yet. Finally my onions that I sowed from seed are starting to bulk up. Also I think I might have turned a corner with the slugs, seen so many hedgehogs this week so I have had a helping hand 😁
Great rhubarb. I'm growing chard- ford hook giant, love the flavor. The bunnies chomped them down to nubs.....but thankfully we'll be getting a harvest shortly. Today I harvested soft neck garlic, beets, carrots and lettuce ....mostly to create some airflow as it's getting to that point in the season. It won't be long before there will be steady harvests.
Hiya Robin. I have some Fordhook chard sown and just sprouting. I noticed one or two bunnies in the garden recently. I’m hoping the protection I use for the chickens will stop the bunnies too. That will become apparent 🥴
@@mygardenanddinosaurs I sure hope so too. Stinkers have been soooo destructive this year, not to mention expensive with all the protection I've purchased.
This is what we toil suffer and curse for Mags 😅 absolutely awesome fresh food. It’s 32c here today 🥵, but gives me time to catch up. Have an awesome weekend, Ali 🥵🌞🇨🇦
Good luck with the little butter bushes. I wonder if they'd benefit from a little cloche to kick start them while in the ground. I've not done mine yet - so much rain, wind and it's been very cold here so the plants have stopped growing, or slowed down big time. I use miscanthus for the chicken bedding and I remember in the old house the slugs used to criss-cross over to pick up spilt food. I removed food at night - they were even in the feeders! YUK! A friend has given me sheep wool - costs more to travel to the wool pick up point than what they get back in return for the shearings. They had spare so I've used that. They don't like lanolin apparently - makes a good mulch and weed suppressant. I've used it sparingly, trying nematodes, and I'm going to put duck feed into traps this year and make a sludge - it has brewers yeast in the pellets!
Hi Kerry. Good suggestion re the cloche. Thanks. I think a multi-pronged approach to slug defences is best. Hope it warms up soon to deter those. Ritters from coming out. Have a great week. Mags.
You’re right of course Terry but I don’t have stakes at the moment. Will add these when I have some though. Hope you and Mrs K are doing ok. Best wishes. Mags.
Türkiye'den merhaba mags tek tek saksılara ekip dikmeye hiç uğraşma bizim burda yaptığımız gibi direkt toprağa dik ek bahçeni beğenerek izliyorum umarım iyisindir 👍👏Hülya 💐
It is always great when I expectations exceed it. Lovely garlic, harvester I’m sure you could easily grow some more from those bulbs that you have as they’ve proved you wrong.❤😊
Hello Mags, sorry to hear about your back, I hope you feel better soon. Lovely to see the cute quail, the enclosure looks fab. What a lovely harvest, the garlic looks amazing and the lovely bunches of shallots 😊🌱👍
Thanks so much Amir 😊 I'm doing all I can to knock my back into shape. Hope it works. The quail are little cuties - most of the time. I was pleasantly surprised with the harvest I must say. All the best. Mags
😢 oh Mags so sorry, I’m dealing with similar, standing helps but laying down is a totally painful situation which is not conducive to a good nights sleep. I have about 3 on my apple tree 😂😂. Can you put a frame and esplanade them (I think that’s what it’s called). My parsnips were all slug food. Great garlic 👍. Do you dry your shallots in the same way as the garlic? It’s looking good Mags and hopefully a good season is in the making, Ali 🥵🌞🇨🇦
Sorry to hear the slugs got your parsnips. Mine are doing well fingers crossed. I have let the shallots dry a bit but actually am going to process them all for the freezer. Sorry also, to hear your back woes. I’m glad I can sleep with mine. Standing and walking are my issues 🥴. I’m pleased with my garlic harvest after all. We are in for a week of warmer weather - yay! Hope your weather is behaving. Mags
Those little apples look so healthy. I loved my Egremont, I'd love to have one here, but we have more than enough! LOL! Sorry about your sciatica, I know what that's like and walking it off definitely helps. My mum always said she had toothache in her bottom - I think a fair description! Brilliant bit of carpentry! Well done! Hahaha! The women were too much for Sid! Rather disappointed Eddie doesn't have a mop of curly hair though! You can still use the garlic leaves if they look good bonus with decent bulbs. I'd be happy with those!
Hiya Kerry. Your mums description is spot on. I’m still struggling but I think it might be improving a touch. Lol, yes the boys would be great with more flamboyant headgear 😂. Looks like we are in for a week of warmer weather - yippee - and I have Frid and Mon off work too 😊. Long weekend in the garden methinks. Take care. Mags
Try to pace yourself - it's too easy to just do one more job, and another and another while the weather holds and naughty nerve says "I'm still heeeere!" All the best xxx
Merhaba mags bıldırcınlar çok tatlı o küçük ağacın elma ağacımı biara portakal limon ağacıda dik bakalım tutucakmı arıların bal veriyormu arıcılık dahada zor son 2 aydır burası çok sıcak Türkiye'den selamlar 😊💐👏 Hülya
Hi. Orange and lemon trees struggle here and would have to be brought indoors in the Winter sadly. I do hope to get pear and plum trees though. We have had cool and wet weather all year but it seems to at last be improving. 😊
how do you keep the cage sooooo clean? Haha I heard they are messy and poops everywhere. I wonder if they could be trained like hamsters and rabbits to only poo on specific places?
They are little poo monsters. I use a hemp bedding called aubichick. It really dries out poos and they disintegrate. It means the quail don’t suffer with poo balls on their toes. I skim the surface most days and replace as needed but the aubichick really makes it easier and much less smelly. I wish you could toilet train them though 🥴
Great live, a lot of slug issues, you just need to feed the slugs. Inter plant with Chinese cabbage and pak choi which the slugs just love and so they have left all the other plants / brassica.
Thanks. I did try that very thing a few weeks ago and it worked like a charm. Of course I was hoping to get a harvest of Pak Choi but the slugs ate it. Do still have my lettuces in that bed though 😊
