I think, compared to Yosuke, Kanji is the straightest character in P4. He subconsciously saw right through Naoto's disguise which made his concious self feel awkward. In most cases when Kanji is laughed at because of his "gayness" (mostly by Yosuke btw), he just can't convey his thoughts properly, it shows how socially awkward Kanji is. While Yosuke is projecting to the point it's not even funny anymore, man wants to assert his sexuality so bad that he straight up bullies Kanji and screams "HA, GAE" every time he has an opportunity to do so. It's a great contrast between a man who isn't bound by prejudice and a guy who makes every effort to fit in
