I had been scouring around for Sir Ron's hip lines on Miles Smiles' Footprints. You addressed a lot of key issues. I mean to get down to looking at your analysis. Never realized Ron took so many liberties with not following the turnaround structure. The Reggie Workman lines may be more my speed after all. Honestly, it's hard in my circle to find folks not married to the dumbed-down Real Book changes.

Would you add the gamification link in the description? Thank you. Outstanding job here. I have a lot of work to do, the idea of classifying and than randomly choosing from a priority list is great, it cut down the time for choosing the daily exercise and in the long term probably will guarantee you practice with the right balance almost everything you need to improve. Gamification is the way, universally recognised as the main learning tool. I will use this a lot. Monday priority one, Tuesday priority three, Wednesday priority two, Thursday priority one Friday priority two. Saturday and Sunday priority one again.

Such great advice! I can always use a reminder to let go of analyzing perfect practice and just hit the shed! "Getting off the information treadmill", as the folks at Open Studio put it. I've spent weeks obsessing over the perfect way to practice, all while getting very little work done in the shed. Upon reflection, I find that my efforts to be over-prescriptive have caused burnout. I like the idea of breaking things into larger categories with options like you mentioned at the ten-minute mark or so. It fosters a good balance between having goals and not overdoing it like I was for so long. Thanks for reading my rambly, unedited thoughts, lol.

@@enzolumare5680 the point I’m Making is about priorities in performance. One doesn’t need to constantly overload the music with variation after variation. Hi Matt, I bought the PDF😇 it’s very interesting and I worked on it. It is possible to mathematize all this from the sixteenth note but as you say it is better to feel listening rather than counting, it is not easy but we get there. Rhythm for me is like scales or harmony that we can analyze but it’s above all a color and a feeling that you have to feel

Your list blew me away. I love the way that you play, how generous you are in explaining things, how much you love the bass, and how much you want to improve others playing. Thanks so much! I've been playing since 1966, that's one year of experience 58 times. But for most of those years that was fine because I was having fun. Recently my wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and I was told that I needed to do something for myself, so I've tried to step up my game. So my list includes thinks like"learn how to bow with the German how, learn major and minor chords, etc. Pretty embarrassing! Btw in high school I was second chair bass and married the first chair bass player! Thanks again for being there for us!!!

That bar 5 thing often feels touch and go in a jam setting to me. I often to stick to my guns and stay on G7, but I often gauge the reaction of the players around me. I became very curious about this and on Ron Carters “Mr Bow Tie” I noticed he would sometimes play the C7. If that doesn’t give us permission I don’t know what does! I prefer the compound chord, but can’t deny the sometimes satisfaction of playing that C7.

Hmmmm well there’s the (true) mythology of him taking a long sabbatical during his rise in stature to redefine his sound by practicing on the Brooklyn Bridge. The album after that sabbatical, The Bridge, is considered a masterpiece. He’s so rightfully known for being a nonstop creativity machine - full of ideas and like never repeating himself…I wonder if there’s some connection to his life in this. I’ve been doing this exercise lately, and I really enjoy it. Not boring in the least! Some of the things I notice that I also pay attention to while I’m doing this exercise are: posture, pressure of my fingers on the string, how hard is my thumb pressing on the back of the neck, overall level of tension in my neck and shoulders as I’m playing, how my right hand is addressing the strings, and, maybe most importantly, my breathing. I notice that I have a tendency to hold my breath sometimes when I’m playing. It’s amazing what you can pay attention to when you’re “bored.“ Great lesson, and a valuable new practice tool. Thanks!

15:10: it seems to me that ALL the ways of doing these things would be valid, and that the only ‘rules’ here are the wish of the bandleader and the direction in which the music is going. Stacked fourths (and suspensions in general) certainly open things up. So if the music a;lows, why not mix and match as you go along?

I thought about how to turn practice into a game. Gamblers can't stop playing and the question is how to translate this MUST into your exercises. Now I divide my homework into 20 minute portions. I turn over a sand timer and practice until the hour glass runs out (20 minutes) For each exercise session I put a card in a box. For example, I practice 10 cards scales. By accumulating the cards, practice has become a game and it's fun to have a lot of cards at the end. With the exercise units lasting 20 minutes each, it is always clearly defined what exactly is being practiced. Regards from Germany Uli
