Todd was right. The cotter pin must have broke allowing the castle nut and stump jumper to fall off. With the help and knowledge of a couple of wonderful friends, we got it repaired.
They call it a poverty grass. It's growing there because your soil balance is off. Test your soil and see what's it's lacking or what is not available because of the biology.

I was thinking some weather stripping on the inside but rubber on the outside may be better. What type of rubber do you suggest? Thanks for your help! 😂
