AWESOME. Now where is a place to camp where we can ride to the Tornado trail head? Realize 90% of us that will use Tornado, buying HMT trail passes, food, fuel etc travel upwards of 2-300 miles and plan to spend at least a few days (camping) to make it worth our while.
I was in Roncerverte WV and we had a old style metal arch bridge across the river. It was about twenty feet above the river bed and the force of the river water started to make the bridge bend and slide on its concrete pillars it was an amazingly powerful sight. Some old locals claimed to have seen the famous Moth-man on the bridge that day. Can’t say yes or no but I did see a steel bridge floating in the current!
My Brother in Law,Mr Franklin Darrel Beach introduced Me& My Brother David to Mr Benny Mallory in the early 70's. Mr Mallory trained Darrel Beach how to Pilot /Navigate the Sky's of West Virginia. They piloted the Kanawha Valley Skies in a 1940's Piper J-3 Cub. Me & My Brother David flew several times with Mr Benny Mallory & Mr Franklin Darrel Beach. The Mountain the Airport rests on is one of God's Beautiful Creations (Spring Hill Mountain) South Charleston Wva. We would rise up near the clouds,and look down on the Coal river & Little Coal River nearby,which are tributaries of the Kanawha River. Mr Mallory & Mr Beach would show & tell Me & David about the Mountain Ranges & Coal Mines & Coal processing plant,to the river coal landings & barge's. We flew over the Blaine island where the Union Carbide Chemical processing plant is still today.Benny & Darrel Circled over Laidley Field Area,where the famous Cincinnati Reds, farm team the Charleston Charlie's played. Benny Mallory & Darrel Beach Served Their Country Proudly. Darrel was a U.S Army Infantryman Soldier. Benny was a U.S. Marine Leatherneck. Don't You Know Darrel & Benny had some stories to tell! We flew over Dunbar WV and were able to see the Gravely Tractors Plant,where Our Daddy worked ! We flew just what seemed like feet above the Kanawha Forrest & Coonskin Park, that were so picturesque from the Aerial view above. Mr Mallory & Mr Beach were God fearing & believing Christians I feel their Flying way up high in the Sky & Clouds filled Their Souls, to see some of God's Breathtaking Creations. I & David were just young kids, at the time. We had smiles on our faces & tears in our eyes. Hey we were flying in the Majestic clouds above: (Almost Heaven West Virginia) I dedicate this to My Brothers: David Pauley & Darrel Beach.
There was no damage around Fairmont itself (the entire city is a good fifty feet and more above the river, but low areas of Rivesville were flooded out. Even the B&O Railroad Yard was high enough that operations were not affected. I always followed the railroad scene, and the devastation of the "Mountain Subdivision" aka "The West End" between Cumberland and Grafton was terrible...the bridge at Rowlesburg washed away and the death of Mr. D.S. Ake on Seventeen Mile Grade when a locomotive he was on slid over the hill when the tracks were undercut by a slide. B&O had already taken the Trailer Trains (Jets) off the previous summer so there wasn't much traffic "over the mountain" except loaded and empty coal hoppers. It was somewhat wonderous that B&O decided to rebuild the bridge at Rowlesburg (albeit with just one track), a job that only took about three weeks. Forty years ago next year, in 2025. I was in the old Rowlesburg High School a few years ago and stopped in the restroom by the old gym. A cold chill ran up my spine when I realized that entire room had been under water for several hours in 1985. The elderly from the era are now gone and the younger ones are now in their fifties and beyond. Anyone who saw it firsthand or even followed the story closely will never forget it.

....I thought USPS announced years ago that they were converting a lot of these walking routes to neighborhood station routes where there is a common locked mailbox location.
